Toyota has issued an airbag recall covering certain Tacoma and Tundra pickup trucks after identifying a potential issue with replacement curtain airbag assemblies. The recall applies only to vehicles that received specific replacement parts, not to trucks equipped with their original factory-installed airbags.
Toyota Airbag Recall Covers Replacement Parts
According to the recall report published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), certain curtain shield airbag (CSA) assemblies sold as replacement parts may not have been properly secured to their mounting brackets during assembly.
If an affected airbag deploys during a crash, portions of the assembly may not reach their intended positions, increasing the risk of injury to vehicle occupants.
The affected replacement airbags were supplied by Joyson Safety Systems. Toyota said other replacement curtain airbags and the original factory-installed airbag assemblies in these trucks are not affected.
Affected Toyota Models
The recall includes a total of 4,118 pickup trucks that previously received replacement curtain shield airbags.
- 2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma: 2,381 vehicles
- 2014-2021 Toyota Tundra Double Cab and CrewMax: 1,737 vehicles
Only vehicles that had the specified replacement airbag assemblies installed are included in the recall.
Toyota Will Inspect and Replace Affected Airbags
According to the recall report:
“All owners of Tacoma vehicles who are known to have had a curtain shield airbag replacement part installed in their vehicles will be notified to return their vehicles to a Toyota dealer. The dealers will inspect the vehicles for the affected replacement parts and will replace any curtain shield airbag assemblies that are found at no cost.”
The inspections and any necessary replacements will be performed free of charge.
