A manufacturing issue affecting certain Ford Ranger and Ford Everest models equipped with a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V6 engine has emerged in global markets. According to reports from Australia, Ford has acknowledged the problem, which can lead to engine oil leaks, and estimates that up to 140,000 vehicles were produced before a permanent manufacturing fix was introduced late last year.
Oil Leak Traced to Turbo Oil Return Line
According to a report from Drive, the issue stems from the turbocharger’s oil return line. A rubber O-ring is reportedly failing under sustained operating conditions, allowing engine oil to leak from the engine bay.
The report states that some owners have experienced the problem after only a few thousand miles, leaving affected vehicles requiring repairs.
Ford has acknowledged the issue and said as many as 140,000 vehicles worldwide were built before a permanent production solution was implemented late last year.
Ford Introduces Repair for Affected Vehicles
To address the issue on vehicles already in service, Ford dealerships are installing a redesigned, longer drain tube. According to the report, the updated component eliminates the need to remove the turbocharger during the repair.
The repair is intended to resolve the oil leak affecting the impacted vehicles.
Volkswagen Amarok Uses the Same Diesel Engine
The same 3.0-liter turbo-diesel engine is also used in the global Volkswagen Amarok pickup.
According to the report, Volkswagen has said it is monitoring a limited number of warranty claims and does not consider the issue to represent a widespread product problem.
