Toyota has expanded a factory-backed upgrade program in Japan that allows owners of eligible vehicles to add new features years after purchase. Called Toyota Factory Upgrade, the initiative combines genuine parts, software updates, and dealer installation to bring new capabilities to older Toyota, Lexus, and GR models.
Toyota Factory Upgrade Builds on an Earlier Program
Toyota introduced the concept three years ago under the name Kinto Factory. The program was created to help owners keep their vehicles on the road longer while offering opportunities to personalize and upgrade them after the original purchase.
Now operating as Toyota Factory Upgrade, the service allows owners to enter their vehicle’s chassis number online, view available upgrades, and schedule installation at participating Toyota, Lexus, or GR dealerships.
Because every upgrade uses genuine factory parts and approved installation procedures, the upgrades continue to be covered under the manufacturer’s warranty.
Factory Upgrades Available for a Wide Range of Models
The program has expanded beyond Toyota models to include Lexus vehicles and select GR performance cars.
Eligible vehicles range from 2004 Hiace vans, 2009 Prius models, and 2011 Aqua models to newer vehicles such as the 2026 Hilux and Land Cruiser FJ. Lexus models including the NX and LC are also covered, along with GR models such as the GR Yaris and Toyota 86.
Available Features Depend on the Vehicle
The available upgrades vary by model.
Depending on the vehicle, owners can add convenience features such as smartphone remote start and remote air conditioning. Other available upgrades include USB-C ports, updated digital displays, new interior trim, Lexus grille replacements, F Sport orange brake calipers, and a Performance Upgrade “Solid” package for the Lexus IS.
Alternative to Over-the-Air Updates
Unlike over-the-air software updates that typically support only newer vehicles, Toyota Factory Upgrade combines software enhancements with physical hardware installations performed by dealership technicians.
The program is designed to give owners access to factory-backed upgrades without replacing their existing vehicles.
Availability Outside Japan Remains Unconfirmed
Toyota has introduced Toyota Factory Upgrade only in Japan and has not announced plans to expand the program to other markets.
The company has not said whether the initiative will be offered in the United States.
For now, Toyota Factory Upgrade represents a factory-supported approach to extending the functionality of older vehicles by combining genuine parts, dealer installation, and software updates for eligible Toyota, Lexus, and GR models in Japan.
