The Volvo EX50 is expected to become the automaker’s new entry-level electric SUV in the United States when it arrives in fall 2027. The new model is planned to replace the EX40 while filling the gap left by the outgoing EX30, giving Volvo a new competitor in the increasingly crowded sub-$50,000 EV segment.
Volvo EX50 to Replace EX40 in the U.S.
Volvo’s EX30 will end production after the 2026 model year, leaving the larger EX40 as the brand’s least expensive fully electric vehicle. However, Volvo plans to introduce the EX50 in fall 2027 as its new entry-level electric SUV.
The EX50 is expected to replace the EX40 in the U.S. market and will be similar in size to models such as the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Hyundai Ioniq 5. Volvo aims for the new SUV to balance value and practicality by replacing the roles currently filled by both the EX30 and EX40.
Expected Pricing and Platform
According to Automotive News, the Volvo EX50 has not yet been officially revealed but is expected to be priced in the high-$40,000 range when it reaches dealerships. By comparison, the current EX40 starts at $56,545.
The EX50 will ride on Volvo’s new SPA3 platform, which it will share with the EX60. The architecture includes an 800-volt electrical system designed to provide faster charging and improved efficiency.
While official driving range figures have not been announced, the EX50 is expected to exceed the EX40’s maximum range of 296 miles. Single-motor and dual-motor versions are also expected to be offered.
Designed as a Dedicated Electric Vehicle
Unlike the EX40, which is built on the older CMA platform shared with the gasoline-powered XC40, the EX50 will be engineered from the ground up as a dedicated electric vehicle.
AutoForecast Solutions Vice President Sam Fiorani said the changing premium EV market requires more than incremental improvements.
“The EX40 helped Volvo establish Volvo in the premium EV market, but today’s competitive landscape demands more than incremental updates,” Fiorani said. “In this luxury segment, standing still is effectively falling behind, making a successor less a matter of necessity than long-term competitiveness.”
Although Volvo has not released the vehicle’s dimensions, the EX50 is expected to be slightly taller, wider, and longer than the EX40 while sharing styling similarities with the new Polestar 7 crossover.
Additional U.S. Models Planned
Beyond the EX50, Volvo is reportedly planning to expand its U.S. lineup with several new vehicles.
The automaker is said to be considering a full-size flagship SUV positioned above the XC90 to compete with vehicles including the BMW X7, Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, and the upcoming Audi Q9.
Volvo may also introduce a midsize sedan and wagon, possibly as early as 2028. Both models are expected to feature fully electric powertrains.
According to AutoForecast Solutions, the EX50 is projected to outperform both future models, with estimated annual production reaching approximately 90,000 units.
Key Model for Volvo’s EV Strategy
Volvo’s electric vehicle lineup has changed significantly in recent years as the company continues adapting to changing customer demand.
The EX30 is scheduled to be discontinued after the 2026 model year, while the EX50 and EX60 are expected to form the foundation of Volvo’s future electric SUV lineup. The new EX50 is also expected to play an important role as Volvo works to improve its U.S. EV sales, which declined 33.1% during the first half of 2026.
With pricing targeted below the current EX40 and a new dedicated electric platform, the EX50 is positioned to become Volvo’s primary entry-level electric SUV in the United States when it arrives in fall 2027.
