BMW iX3 production is facing an unexpected challenge as record heat and drought across Central Europe have forced the shutdown of Hungary’s only nuclear power plant. The disruption comes as BMW ramps up production of the all-electric iX3 at its Debrecen facility, where the company is launching its new Neue Klasse generation.
Paks Nuclear Plant Shuts Down Amid Historic Drought
Hungary’s Paks nuclear power plant has shut down completely for the first time in its 44-year history after low water levels in the Danube River prevented the facility from drawing enough water to cool its four Soviet-era reactors.
The plant, which normally supplies nearly half of Hungary’s electricity, had already been operating at less than half capacity before Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar confirmed the full shutdown. He warned that it could take weeks before the reactors return to service.
With no significant rainfall forecast, the Hungarian government has asked large industrial electricity users, including automakers and battery manufacturers, to voluntarily reduce power consumption. Officials have also indicated that mandatory restrictions remain possible if conditions continue to worsen.
BMW Adjusts Energy Use as iX3 Production Continues
The situation comes at a critical time for BMW as its Debrecen plant continues increasing production of the all-electric iX3, the first model built on the company’s new Neue Klasse platform.
Last week, the factory assembled its 50,000th iX3 from the Neue Klasse family.
A BMW spokesperson told the German newspaper Welt that the Debrecen facility has already reduced electricity consumption by approximately 15% through short-term efficiency measures.
Despite the power challenges, production has continued without interruption.
Renewable Energy Helps Support Operations
BMW may be better positioned than many other manufacturers operating in Hungary because the Debrecen plant was designed as the BMW Group’s first vehicle factory to operate entirely on renewable electricity during normal operations.
The facility is supported in part by an approximately 50-hectare on-site solar installation, one of Hungary’s largest industrial photovoltaic systems. During clear summer days, the solar array can generate nearly enough electricity to power the factory independently, while a thermal storage system stores excess solar energy for periods with less sunshine.
Automakers Across the Region Feel the Impact
The effects of low Danube water levels are also being felt beyond Hungary.
In neighboring Romania, reduced river levels have forced lower output at the Cernavodă nuclear power plant, leading to production shutdowns at Dacia and Ford manufacturing facilities.
Mercedes-Benz is also facing similar conditions at its Kecskemét plant in Hungary. While that facility also uses a large solar installation that supplies roughly one-quarter of its annual electricity needs, it remains subject to the same pressure on the national power grid.
Weather Remains the Key Factor
BMW’s ability to maintain current production levels will likely depend on weather conditions in the coming weeks.
Although renewable energy generation and thermal storage help reduce reliance on the national grid, they cannot fully offset a nationwide electricity shortage if cloud cover increases or drought conditions persist.
If the current heat wave continues, Hungary is expected to rely heavily on electricity imports to support both its power grid and its export-focused automotive industry through the remainder of the summer.
