Nissan has reported a return to profitability in the first quarter of financial year 2026-2027, marking its first profitable quarter in two years. The results highlight a significant turnaround under CEO Ivan Espinosa, even as the automaker continues to face challenges including weaker global sales, tariffs, and external market pressures.

Nissan Reports First Quarterly Profit in Two Years

Not long ago, Nissan was facing mounting financial pressure, with significant losses, weak sales, and a failed partnership with Honda raising questions about the company’s future. About a month ago, reports also claimed that some investors wanted former executive Carlos Ghosn to return to the company.

Since taking over as CEO, Ivan Espinosa has overseen what the company describes as steady progress in its recovery efforts. In a previous update, Espinosa said the Re:Nissan plan was ahead of schedule, although achieving that progress required difficult decisions.

Despite reporting a loss of $3.4 billion during the previous financial year, Nissan’s latest quarterly results indicate that those restructuring efforts are beginning to deliver measurable improvements.

Financial Results Show Significant Year-Over-Year Improvement

During the first quarter of financial year 2026-2027, Nissan returned to profitability after two years in the red.

Compared with the same quarter a year earlier, the company’s financial performance improved dramatically. In the first quarter of FY2025-2026, Nissan recorded an operating loss of 79.1 billion yen (-$502 million), while net income fell by 115.8 billion yen (-$734.4 million).

In the latest quarter, Nissan posted an operating profit of 77.9 billion yen (+$492.2 million), and net income increased by 3.8 billion yen (+$24.1 million).

Over the course of one year, the automaker improved operating profit by 157 billion yen ($996.2 million) and increased net income by 119.5 billion yen ($758.2 million). The improvement came even as the company continued to absorb tariff-related costs.

Challenges Remain Despite the Turnaround

Although Nissan has returned to profit, several challenges remain. Global sales and vehicle deliveries continue to decline overall, an issue the company still needs to address.

The automaker also continues to face competitive pressure from Chinese manufacturers, along with the impact of tariffs and the Iran conflict.

More recently, the Kumamoto earthquake in Kyushu, Japan, may force Nissan to slow production at its manufacturing facility in the prefecture.

North America Plays a Key Role in Nissan’s Strategy

Looking ahead, Nissan is counting on the North American market to support future growth, alongside the launch of new and redesigned vehicles.

The company is also placing greater emphasis on Infiniti, its luxury division, while increasing the use of AI assistance in vehicle development as it works to match what it describes as “China Speed.”

Nissan reported that U.S. sales and production are increasing, but noted that stronger performance across its other global markets will be necessary if the company is to sustain profitability.

The latest quarterly results represent a major financial milestone for Nissan, reflecting substantial year-over-year improvement while underscoring that significant operational and market challenges still remain.
