BMW M3 Touring appears to be moving closer to a second generation following the strong reception of the first production model. Reports indicate the next-generation performance wagon is already associated with the codename G88, while BMW has also confirmed that the upcoming M3 will continue to offer a pure combustion-powered version.
BMW M3 Touring’s Success Paved the Way for a Successor
About 25 years ago, the idea of an M3 wagon received little enthusiasm from then-current M3 owners. Although BMW built a single E46 M3 Touring prototype as a proof of concept, it took decades before the company introduced a full-production M3 Touring.
BMW eventually entered the compact high-performance wagon segment with the G81 M3 Touring, competing against rivals from Audi and Mercedes-Benz. The model became a surprise success for BMW’s M division, despite never being offered in the United States.
Second-Generation Model Reportedly Carries G88 Codename
According to BMWBlog, the next-generation BMW M3 Touring is already linked to the codename G88, indicating that development is underway. The report also suggests the G88 will be the gasoline-powered version.
BMW has previously confirmed that the next M3 will continue to be available with a pure internal combustion engine, dismissing earlier rumors that it would become a plug-in hybrid.
The report says the upcoming model is expected to use an even more powerful version of BMW’s 3.0-liter twin-turbo engine with mild-hybrid assistance.
It also notes that BMW is expected to phase out Competition models after approximately 80% of buyers chose that variant. As a result, stronger performance versions are expected to be available from launch, with output anticipated to exceed 500 horsepower.
Based on the previous generation, the second-generation M3 Touring is also expected to feature all-wheel drive and an automatic transmission.
Potential U.S. Launch Under Consideration
The report also states that BMW is exploring the possibility of expanding its wagon lineup in the United States, and the G88 M3 Touring could become one of the models considered.
The success of the G99 M5 Touring is described as strengthening the business case for introducing a smaller M performance wagon, while enthusiasts have continued to call for the M3 Touring to reach American dealerships.
According to the report, buyers interested in performance wagons have demonstrated a willingness to purchase these vehicles rather than simply expressing interest, making the segment distinct despite its relatively small size.
Performance Wagon Could Expand BMW’s U.S. Portfolio
Although the report does not expect an M3 Touring to match the sales volume of BMW’s X3 or X5, it suggests the model could develop a dedicated following if it is introduced in the U.S. market.
With a reported second-generation model in development and BMW continuing to support a combustion-powered M3, the M3 Touring appears positioned to build on the momentum created by its first production generation.
