Ram is reportedly preparing to phase out the Hemi eTorque mild-hybrid system beginning with its 2027 pickup lineup. The move follows the return of Hemi V8-powered models without eTorque and is expected to simplify the powertrain while lowering costs across future applications.
Ram Shifts Back to a Simpler Hemi V8
Ram reintroduced the Hemi V8 this year with the eTorque mild-hybrid assist system, aiming to balance enthusiast appeal with more sustainable motoring.
According to the report, that combination has not gained broad popularity, and the automaker is now moving toward eliminating the eTorque system.
The shift became evident when Ram introduced the new Rumble Bee lineup several months ago. All three variants featured the Hemi V8 without the eTorque system, marking a return to a more traditional engine configuration.
Affordable Hemi Models Could Benefit
According to a Ram representative, removing the eTorque system allows the company to offer the Hemi V8 in more affordable models and applications. The representative also indicated that the change could make a Hemi V8 model priced around $50,000 possible.
Phase-Out Expected to Begin With 2027 Ram Pickups
According to a recent report from Mopar Insiders, Ram will begin phasing out the eTorque system with the introduction of the 2027 model-year Ram pickups.
Returning to the conventional Hemi V8 eliminates several components associated with the mild-hybrid system, including the belt-driven motor generator, the 48-volt battery, and the automatic start/stop system.
The initial phase of the transition will affect Hemi V8-powered Ram 1500 models. However, a limited number of vehicles equipped with eTorque will continue to be produced during the transition period, allowing both versions to remain in production temporarily.
Production Transition Will Be Gradual
Ram also confirmed to Mopar Insiders that production of the eTorque system will not end immediately when the 2027 model year begins.
Instead, the mild-hybrid system will remain in production while the company transitions its assembly lines to the simplified Hemi V8 configuration.
The report also states that the engine assembly operation is already transitioning at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant in Michigan.
With the reported phased rollout, Ram is expected to gradually replace the Hemi eTorque system with a conventional Hemi V8 configuration as production shifts toward the 2027 model year.
