Tesla Cybertruck has quietly received a hardware update that replaces aluminum underbody panels with carbon fiber components on newly produced vehicles. The change, discovered by owners and later confirmed by Tesla’s Cybertruck Lead Engineer, is intended to improve durability, reduce weight, lower manufacturing costs, and enhance aerodynamic performance.
Cybertruck Receives a Quiet Hardware Upgrade
Over the past year, Tesla has expanded the Cybertruck’s off-road capabilities through software updates that added features such as locking differentials, terrain modes, enhanced traction control, and additional trail-focused functions.
Now, the company has introduced a physical upgrade that is largely hidden from view. The update affects the truck’s underbody and is not immediately visible unless owners inspect the underside of the vehicle.
Owners First Identified the New Components
The change was first identified by X user Coleton Guerin while examining a newly delivered Cyberbeast.
According to Guerin, both the front and rear underbody panels appeared to be made from carbon fiber instead of the aluminum panels used on earlier Cybertrucks. After sharing images online, he questioned when Tesla had made the change.
Tesla Engineer Explains the Switch to Carbon Fiber
Wes Morrill, Tesla’s Cybertruck Lead Engineer, responded by confirming the new material.
According to Morrill, company testing showed that carbon fiber outperformed stamped aluminum in several areas. He said the new panels are stronger, lighter, and less expensive to manufacture.
Morrill also explained that carbon fiber allows engineers to shape the areas around the mounting bolts to improve airflow beneath the vehicle.
As a result, the update provides benefits for manufacturing, durability, and aerodynamics.
Upgrade Already Appearing on New Cybertrucks
According to owner reports, Cybertrucks equipped with the new carbon fiber underbody panels are already being delivered without any formal product announcement or model-year change.
The update has reportedly been introduced into production without affecting vehicle pricing.
Tesla continues to list the Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive Cybertruck with a starting price of $69,990, the Premium All-Wheel Drive version at $79,990, and the Cyberbeast at $99,990.
Availability for Existing Owners Remains Unclear
The report notes that it is not yet known whether the carbon fiber underbody panel upgrade will be made available to owners of earlier Cybertruck models.
For now, the revised underbody components are appearing on newly built vehicles while Tesla maintains the existing pricing across the Cybertruck lineup.
