Premium car brands are losing some of their appeal as mainstream vehicles increasingly offer the technology and features once associated with luxury models. According to a J.D. Power Automotive OEM Intelligence Report, more premium-vehicle owners traded their vehicles for mainstream models during the first half of 2026.

Premium Brands’ Market Share Falls

Premium brands, excluding direct-to-consumer automakers, accounted for 13.3% of new-vehicle sales in the first half of 2026, down from 13.8% a year earlier, according to the report. That represents the segment’s smallest share since 2020.

The shift comes as features such as large infotainment screens and heated seats have become increasingly common beyond premium vehicles. The wider availability of in-car technology has raised the level of equipment expected by buyers across the market.

Mainstream SUVs Attract Premium Buyers

The movement away from premium brands is particularly visible among SUV buyers. The report found that 32% of consumers trading in a midsize premium SUV purchased a vehicle from a non-luxury brand.

Midsize premium SUVs are the top-selling premium market segment, with models such as the BMW X5, Lexus RX and Lincoln Nautilus competing in the category.

Mainstream midsize SUVs, including the Ford Explorer, Toyota Highlander and Kia Telluride, accounted for 11% of those transactions. Compact SUVs accounted for another 6%.

Among compact premium SUV owners, 30% moved to mainstream brands. Another 10% chose a midsize SUV, while 9% selected a similarly sized mainstream model, a category that includes the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.

Additionally, 42% of compact premium car owners chose a mainstream vehicle.

Price Is Not the Only Factor

The average transaction price for the mainstream midsize SUVs purchased was $51,500, compared with $70,600 for the premium vehicles traded in.

However, the study noted that the destination segment matters because it shows buyers are not leaving luxury vehicles based on price alone. Mainstream vehicles have become sophisticated enough to offer many of the qualities that were once largely associated with premium brands.

The trend is also reflected in J.D. Power’s 2026 APEAL Study. The study found that the emotional-satisfaction gap between premium and mass-market brands had narrowed to 29 points on a 1,000-point scale, compared with 66 points in 2008.

Technology Is Narrowing the Luxury Gap

The study credits competition from electric vehicles with accelerating improvements in in-car technology. That trend became more apparent at the start of this decade with models such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5.

The rise of affordable, feature-packed Chinese cars in global markets may also have pushed established automakers to keep pace, according to the report.

Which Buyers Are Leaving Premium Brands?

The Automotive OEM Intelligence Report identified several differences among consumers who remain with premium brands and those who move to mainstream vehicles.

  • Baby Boomers and Pre-Boomers are the most likely to remain in the premium segment.
  • Millennials and Gen Z buyers defect at higher rates.
  • Buyers earning $200,000 or more are the most likely to remain in the premium segment, while retention weakens as income declines.
  • Customers moving to mainstream brands are more likely to live in rural or suburban areas.

The findings suggest that sophisticated in-car features and badge prestige may no longer be enough for premium brands to separate themselves from mainstream competitors. The study indicates that providing a more upscale customer experience may offer another way for premium brands to distinguish themselves.
