The Smart #2 is set to revive the brand’s micro-car formula, returning to the compact city-car concept that made the Smart ForTwo famous. The new two-seat electric model has been leaked ahead of its expected global launch in October, revealing its dimensions, powertrain and available styling options.
Smart #2 Replaces the ForTwo
The original Smart ForTwo helped establish the modern micro city-car segment decades ago, offering a tiny footprint designed for navigating heavily congested cities, particularly in Europe. Although the segment later struggled as buyers continued to favor larger vehicles, the rise of electric propulsion has given micro-cars renewed relevance.
Smart has continued as a brand with slightly larger vehicles while maintaining its focus on compact mobility. Now, it is preparing a new micro-car designed in the spirit of the original ForTwo.
The ForTwo was last sold in 2024, although sales in North America ended years earlier, in the late 2010s. Rather than revive the ForTwo name, Smart will call its new model the #2, following the brand’s current naming process.
The #2 is being developed through a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Chinese automaker Geely, indicating that China will be an important market for the vehicle.
Smart #2 Specifications and Electric Range
Details of the new Smart #2 appeared in automotive filings released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, or MIIT. According to Car News China, the model’s official global launch is expected sometime in October of this year.
The Smart #2 is primarily designed as a city EV and has seating for two people. Its dimensions are listed as 2,751 mm and 2,764 mm, with a width of 1,669 mm and a height of 1,555 mm. The wheelbase measures 1,875 mm.
Power comes from a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery using individual cells produced by CATL, while Geely will manage the battery assembly. The electric powertrain produces around 80 hp and gives the #2 a top speed of 140 km/h.
The 35.7-kWh battery pack provides a WLTP range of 186 miles, which is double the range of the discontinued ForTwo.
Smart #2 Offers Multiple Styling Choices
The MIIT filings also reveal several customization options for the Smart #2. Buyers will be able to select between 15-inch and 16-inch wheels, along with different wheel designs.
The model will also be available with either a body-colored roof or a black roof. The filings appear to indicate that a lower variant will be offered without radars or a front camera.
Smart Begins Global #2 Marketing Campaign
With the expected October launch approaching, Smart has already begun marketing the new micro-car globally. Murals featuring the Smart #2 have appeared in several major cities, accompanied by the words “It’s Back.”
The murals are believed to be headed for China, Australia, South America and most of continental Europe as Smart prepares to introduce its new two-seat electric city car.
