A rare Porsche 911 Carrera RSR built as a road-going version of the 964-generation race car has sold for $4.7 million, despite spending most of its life in storage. Only two of the 51 Carrera RSR 3.8 examples produced by Porsche were commissioned as “Strassenversion,” or road-going, versions, and this Polar Silver car was one of them.
A Race Car Made Street-Usable
The 964-generation Carrera RSR 3.8 was built as a turnkey competition machine intended to go racing straight from the factory. Porsche produced just 51 examples, but a Porsche VIP commissioned two cars with full interiors and modifications that made them usable on public roads while retaining their full race chassis.
This particular car, chassis WP0ZZZ96ZPS496107, was built in 1993 but was not delivered until March 1996, nearly two years after RSR production ended. It eventually became part of a large private collection, where it remained for almost 20 years.
The car later sold for $4.7 million at RM Sotheby’s earlier this year. Its history is particularly unusual because the Carrera RSR was designed to be driven hard in competition, while this example spent most of its existence doing almost the exact opposite.
Extreme RSR Hardware Beneath the Luxury Interior
The “road-going RSR” description does little to convey how closely the car remained connected to its racing specification. Both Strassenversion examples received the uprated, twin-ignition Le Mans-spec 3.8-liter flat-six, along with a 120-liter fuel tank, a full air-jack system and a 40-percent locking rear differential.
The objective was not to turn the RSR into a comfortable road car. Instead, Porsche made a genuine motorsport machine slightly more livable without removing the features that defined it.
The original buyer also commissioned an extensively customized interior. Guards Red leather covers the seats, steering column, center console and door panels, as well as portions of the roll cage and air-jack system.
Gold brake calipers and Speedline RS wheels with Amethyst Metallic centers complete the bespoke specification. The same customer also ordered four Turbo S Lightweights alongside the two RSRs, creating a six-car commission unlike anything Porsche would normally build for a single buyer.
Nearly Two Decades in Storage
After its delayed delivery in March 1996, the RSR went directly into storage as part of the private collection. When it resurfaced in 2015, the car had accumulated only six miles.
It still wore its factory Cosmoline protective coating and retained its original tires, matching-numbers engine and original Getrag gearbox. The car changed hands again in 2017 and 2023, but its odometer remained at the same mileage.
A Rare RSR That Was Barely Driven
The car’s $4.7 million sale underscores the unusual history of one of only two road-going Porsche 911 Carrera RSR examples. Built from a full race-car foundation and equipped with a luxury-oriented interior, it spent most of its life preserved rather than driven.
