Midnight Club 5 was reportedly in development at Rockstar San Diego before the project was canceled, ending plans for another entry in the street racing franchise. According to former Rockstar San Diego senior designer Kris Roberts, the game was set to take the series to London but never progressed beyond its early development stages.

Midnight Club 5 Was Set for London

It has been nearly two decades since Midnight Club: Los Angeles arrived on consoles in 2008. Despite the franchise’s continued improvement with each release, Rockstar Games ultimately moved away from the series.

Roberts recently shared the story with Insider Gaming, revealing that development on Midnight Club 5 had actually begun. The team was actively working on the project, which was planned around a London setting, but development never advanced beyond the initial phases.

Conflict Inside Rockstar

According to Roberts, the cancellation stemmed from an internal conflict between Rockstar San Diego and the company’s global headquarters in New York.

The Midnight Club team accused Rockstar’s leadership of applying double standards and showing clear favoritism toward Grand Theft Auto, the company’s most prominent franchise.

The tension reportedly began before Midnight Club: Los Angeles was released. The game missed its original early 2008 deadline and was subsequently delayed until late October.

Although the finished game received strong praise and performed exceptionally well against competitors such as Need for Speed, the production delays damaged Rockstar San Diego’s standing with corporate leadership.

Grand Theft Auto Took Priority

The decision to abandon Midnight Club 5 reflected a broader choice by Rockstar to concentrate its resources on the continued success of Grand Theft Auto.

The video game industry routinely cancels projects, including high-quality and profitable ones, in favor of products capable of generating consistent and substantial revenue. Rockstar eventually shifted its racing-related gaming focus toward the highly monetized standalone GTA Online product.

A Corporate Casualty, Not a Failed Game

According to the account shared by Roberts, Midnight Club 5 was not canceled because of poor sales or weak game design. Instead, the project became a casualty of Rockstar’s corporate priorities.

The Midnight Club team had begun building another street racing experience, but the project ultimately could not survive while operating in the shadow of Grand Theft Auto.
