The new Ram TRX delivers significantly more power than its predecessor, but a comparison between the two trucks shows that greater horsepower does not necessarily translate into dramatically quicker performance. A video from The Fast Lane Truck put the old and new TRX models head-to-head, with weight emerging as a key factor.
Old Ram TRX vs. New TRX
The Fast Lane Truck recently posted a video comparing the previous-generation Ram TRX with the new model. The hosts also included the more affordable RHO to determine how its performance compared with the TRX.
The RHO versus TRX race produced the expected result, with the significantly less powerful RHO finishing well behind the TRX. The RHO produces 540 hp, compared with 777 hp for the TRX.
The comparison between the old and new TRX was much closer. In the standstill race, the new TRX narrowly defeated the old model “by a nose,” producing a photo-finish moment. In the rolling race, the result was reversed, with the old TRX narrowly beating the newer truck.
Why the New TRX Isn’t Much Faster
The power difference between the two trucks is substantial. The new TRX produces 777 hp, while the old model makes 702 hp, giving the newer truck a 75-hp advantage.
The new TRX also has 30 ft-lb more torque than its predecessor. Despite those gains, the newer truck carries considerably more weight.
Weight Changes the Performance Equation
The previous TRX weighs 6,440 pounds, while the new TRX weighs 6,750 pounds. That 310-pound difference offsets some of the newer truck’s power advantage and highlights the importance of the power-to-weight ratio.
The new TRX also has 410 pounds less payload capacity than the old model. While these trucks are not designed primarily for hauling, the difference represents another significant change between the two generations.
The comparison shows that the new TRX has considerably more horsepower and torque than the previous model, yet its additional weight keeps the performance gap between the two trucks remarkably small in the races.
