The 2027 GMC Canyon is set to gain a simple but useful convenience feature that has been missing from the midsize pickup: a universal garage-door opener. The update comes alongside new 5G connectivity, giving the Canyon additional technology as GMC prepares the first midcycle refresh of the current third-generation truck.
2027 GMC Canyon Adds Universal Garage-Door Opener
The GMC Canyon competes with the Ford Ranger and Toyota Tacoma while occupying a slightly more upscale position than its Chevrolet Colorado sibling. Despite that positioning, the Canyon has never offered a universal garage-door opener.
According to GM Authority, that changes for the 2027 model year. The Canyon will offer the feature for the first time, giving owners a built-in way to operate compatible garage doors and gates without relying on a separate handheld remote.
Universal garage-door openers are typically integrated into the rearview mirror, overhead console or sun visor. They send a programmed signal to compatible devices, with most systems capable of controlling up to three doors or gates through dedicated buttons.
5G Connectivity Joins the Update
The 2027 Canyon will also gain 5G connectivity, allowing faster data transfers and streaming while supporting connected features such as the truck’s Wi-Fi hotspot.
Data plans will be available through OnStar, GM’s subscription-based telematics service and counterpart to systems such as Toyota Connected Services. A subscription will still be required to use the Canyon’s Wi-Fi hotspot.
Both the universal garage-door opener and 5G connectivity will also be offered on the 2027 Chevrolet Colorado.
More Power Could Be Coming
The 2027 Canyon and Colorado are also expected to receive an updated 2.7-liter turbocharged L4B inline-four. The engine is expected to produce more power than the outgoing L3B, which develops 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque.
Beyond the technology and powertrain changes, pricing for the 2027 Canyon remains unavailable. The truck is expected to retain the GM 31XX-2 platform and continue production at the automaker’s Wentzville Assembly plant in Missouri.
What the 2027 Canyon Refresh Could Cost
The updates will represent the first midcycle refresh of the current third-generation Canyon. Because the changes arrive as part of a midcycle refresh, a price increase is possible.
For reference, the 2026 Canyon starts at $38,900, excluding destination charges, for the Elevation trim. The AT4X is the most expensive regular trim at $57,300 and emphasizes off-road capability.
Buyers looking for the range-topping trim with a greater focus on comfort can choose the Denali, which starts at $53,300.
The 2027 GMC Canyon will therefore bring several updates to the midsize pickup, including its first universal garage-door opener, new 5G connectivity and an expected engine update as GMC moves forward with the truck’s first midcycle refresh.
