Tesla is recalling 20,349 vehicles over a headlight issue that could cause low beams to shine too brightly in the upper corners of their light pattern. The recall affects certain Model 3 and Model Y vehicles and was filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on August 4, 2026, under NHTSA Recall No. 26V507.
Which Tesla Vehicles Are Affected?
The recall covers 18,735 Model Y electric SUVs built between February 11, 2020 and December 24, 2023. It also includes 1,614 Model 3 sedans produced between July 24, 2017 and December 2, 2023.
Tesla identified the affected vehicle identification numbers, or VINs, by reviewing build and service records. Owners of 2017-2023 Model 3 vehicles and 2020-2023 Model Y vehicles could be affected if their cars received a headlamp built on or after June 2, 2023.
Tesla Headlight Issue Raises Safety Concerns
According to the recall document, the low beams on affected vehicles can be too bright in the upper corners of the light pattern, meaning they do not comply with federal standards.
The headlights can illuminate areas where they should not, potentially creating a safety hazard for oncoming vehicles. The excessive brightness in those areas can increase the risk of a crash.
Marelli Automotive Lighting is the supplier involved in the recall.
Tesla Has Not Yet Determined a Repair
Tesla has not yet determined a remedy for the affected vehicles. As a result, there is currently no repair plan or replacement part available for owners.
According to the recall information, the problematic lamps were no longer being used by the time Tesla filed a similar recall in March 2024. Model 3 vehicles received new, compliant headlights beginning in July 2020, while Model Y vehicles switched to compliant lamps in 2022 and 2023.
Recall Notices Coming in September
Tesla stores and service centers were notified earlier this month. Vehicle owners will begin receiving recall letters in phases starting in mid-September.
