The Toyota GR Prius may be more than a wild idea. A fresh report from Japan suggests Toyota could be preparing a performance-focused Prius based on the dramatic Prius 24h Le Mans Centennial GR Edition concept unveiled in 2023.
The Prius Could Get a Proper GR Treatment
The latest-generation Toyota Prius has already moved well beyond the quirky styling associated with earlier models, adopting a sleeker and sportier appearance. Now, a report from Japan’s Best Car, via Creative Trend, claims Toyota may be considering a GR Prius with genuine performance credentials.
The report points to a model that would go beyond a half-hearted GR Sport treatment. Instead, the rumored GR Prius could receive a more serious performance makeover.
While a performance-oriented Prius may sound unexpected, Toyota has already demonstrated that the hybrid can take on a much more aggressive appearance.
The GR Prius Could Draw From a Le Mans Concept
According to the report, the rumored GR Prius would be based on the Prius 24h Le Mans Centennial GR Edition concept that Toyota Gazoo Racing unveiled in 2023.
The concept was created to celebrate 100 years of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Toyota transformed the Prius with motorsport-inspired equipment and styling influenced heavily by the Toyota GR010 HYBRID WEC racer, while retaining the Prius’ 2.0-liter hybrid powertrain underneath.
The concept featured side skirts, canards, a large rear wing, a rear diffuser and a carbon-fiber hood. Toyota also widened the track and fitted the car with 235/50 R18 tires and special aero wheels.
Additional lights were included to improve night vision, adding another functional element to the aggressive design.
At the time, Toyota gave no indication that the concept would reach showrooms. The latest report, however, suggests the idea could now receive another opportunity.
What Could Power a Toyota GR Prius?
A GR Prius would fit within Toyota’s current performance approach while retaining the model’s hybrid foundation. The report suggests a pure gas engine should not be expected.
Instead, the rumored setup could pair a 2.0-liter engine with Toyota’s hybrid system, with electric all-wheel drive also a possibility.
When Could the GR Prius Debut?
Best Car reports that Toyota could unveil the GR Prius at the 2027 Tokyo Auto Salon, which is scheduled to begin January 15.
The report also suggests the car could arrive as a full production model rather than another concept.
There is still plenty of uncertainty surrounding the claim. Toyota has not confirmed the GR Prius, and the 2023 Le Mans concept was not presented as a production preview.
For now, the Toyota GR Prius remains a rumor. But if the latest report proves accurate, the Prius could be headed toward a significantly more performance-focused chapter.
