BYD’s Denza is once again drawing attention with the newly revealed range figures for its N8 and N8L electric SUVs. Data released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) shows the Denza N8 can claim up to 623 miles (1,003 kilometers) of range with a 130.15-kWh battery under China’s CLTC testing standard.

A lower-capacity 105.792-kWh battery is also available, with a claimed range of at least 497 miles. The larger Denza N8L, a long-wheelbase version of the SUV, comes standard with the 130.15-kWh battery and claims up to 596 miles of range under CLTC.

Denza N8 Offers Up to 623 Miles of Claimed Range

The headline numbers are impressive, particularly for an SUV. With its larger battery, the Denza N8 appears to deliver a level of claimed electric range that would be remarkable by U.S. standards.

Denza has previously made ambitious range claims, including for its 1,000-horsepower Z9 GT. The N8 continues that approach, although the testing standard behind the figures is an important part of the story.

The N8 is also positioned as a luxury EV and will offer a range of features and powertrain configurations. Buyers can choose between single- and triple-motor versions, with the triple-motor setup producing a claimed 1,193 horsepower. The single-motor version produces up to 497 horsepower.

The N8L Adds a Long-Wheelbase Option

The Denza N8L expands the lineup with a long-wheelbase configuration. Unlike the standard N8, the N8L comes with the 130.15-kWh battery as standard and claims up to 596 miles of range under CLTC.

The figures have attracted attention because they put the Denza SUVs in an extraordinary position on paper. However, there is an important reason those numbers cannot be directly compared with U.S. EPA estimates.

Why CLTC Range Figures Can Look So High

China’s CLTC testing standard uses a driving cycle that emphasizes lower-speed operation and stop-and-go city traffic. That differs from the EPA testing approach, which accounts for highway driving, higher speeds and faster acceleration.

Higher speeds generally increase aerodynamic drag, which can reduce an electric vehicle’s efficiency and range. As a result, CLTC figures can be considerably more optimistic than EPA estimates.

The article estimates that converting a CLTC figure to a potential EPA figure could result in a reduction of around 30% or more. That is only a rough estimate, however, and not an official EPA rating for the Denza N8.

How the Denza N8 Could Compare With U.S. EVs

The comparison becomes more complicated when looking at America’s longest-range electric vehicles. The Lucid Air Grand Touring has an EPA-rated range of up to 516 miles, while Car and Driver recorded 410 miles during its own testing.

Applying the article’s speculative 30% reduction to the Denza N8’s 623-mile CLTC figure produces roughly 436 miles. That would put the SUV below the Lucid’s official EPA rating, although the calculation is only an estimate and not a substitute for official testing.

The Cadillac Escalade IQ is another relevant comparison, with an EPA estimate of 460 miles. Using the same rough calculation, the Denza N8’s potential range would also fall below that figure.

U.S. Testing Would Tell the Real Story

The Denza N8 and N8L have not undergone EPA testing, so there is currently no official U.S. range figure for either vehicle. The vehicles also have not been sold in the United States, making a direct comparison with American-market EVs difficult.

Driving conditions, speeds and testing procedures can all affect real-world range. For that reason, the N8’s 623-mile CLTC figure should be viewed as a Chinese testing-standard claim rather than an indication of how far the SUV would travel under EPA conditions.

The numbers nevertheless highlight the rapid development of electric vehicles in China. Whether the Denza N8 could actually challenge America’s longest-range EVs remains unknown until it undergoes testing under a comparable standard.
