The Porsche Taycan is not headed for an immediate end, despite a report from Germany claiming Porsche plans to discontinue the electric sedan. Porsche has confirmed that it is streamlining the Taycan lineup, but the company says it currently has no plans to discontinue the model in the short term.

Porsche Is Cutting Taycan Variants

German business magazine Wirtschaftswoche reported that Porsche planned to phase out the Taycan, with the process potentially beginning soon. Citing insider sources, the report said Porsche had considered ending production immediately before deciding to pursue a slower phase-out.

According to the report, the Taycan would be discontinued no later than 2030. It also claimed that Porsche’s works council had agreed to the move, although the decision had not yet been formalized.

The report further stated that Porsche had considered moving Taycan production from Stuttgart to Leipzig. Under that plan, the electric sedan would be produced alongside the Panamera and Macan EV rather than the 911.

Porsche Says the Taycan Is Staying

CarBuzz contacted Porsche about the report, and a spokesperson confirmed that the company is working to streamline the Taycan model range. That process has already begun, with the Cross Turismo and Sport Turismo wagons set to disappear from U.S. dealers after the 2026 model year.

However, Porsche pushed back on the claim that the entire Taycan line is being discontinued. In a statement emailed to CarBuzz, the spokesperson said, “streamlining the model range does not necessarily mean discontinuing entire model lines. For the Taycan, we will continue to reduce the number of variants in order to lower complexity.”

Porsche also directly addressed the possibility of an imminent end to the Taycan.

“We currently have no plans to discontinue the Taycan in the short term. We have invested significantly in the model and will continue to monitor how demand develops.”

Taycan Sales Have Fallen Since 2021

The Taycan launched in 2020, with Porsche expecting strong demand for the electric performance car. Sales peaked at around 41,000 in 2021, but annual sales fell to well under 20,000 in 2025, while this year is not looking better.

The Taycan’s 2021 sales peak was nearly twice the volume of Porsche’s 718 sports cars and around 30% higher than the Panamera sedan. Since then, the Panamera has remained steady at around 30,000 units while Taycan sales have declined.

The Panamera also shares considerably more with other Porsche and Audi vehicles, helping lower costs.

Could the Taycan and Panamera Converge?

The future relationship between the Taycan and Panamera could become increasingly important as Porsche looks to reduce costs. New CEO Michael Leiters is seeking to trim expenses, while reports have suggested that the next generation could offer both gas and electric powertrains on the same platform.

That future model could potentially use the same name, according to the report.

Porsche Is Reducing Taycan Complexity

Porsche has historically offered a wide range of variants for its models, but maintaining 11 different Taycan variants becomes a more significant manufacturing challenge when sales decline.

Reducing the number of Taycan variants could make the model easier to support while lowering manufacturing complexity. For now, Porsche’s position is clear: the Taycan is staying, even as the company continues to reduce the number of versions it offers.
