MINI is marking 61 years since one of its most celebrated motorsport victories with the MINI 1965 Victory Edition, a limited-run model inspired by the Mini Cooper S that won the 1965 Monte Carlo Rally.
The Monte Carlo Victory That Made the Mini a Legend
The 1965 Monte Carlo Rally delivered one of the defining moments in Mini motorsport history. Finnish driver Timo Mäkinen and British co-driver Paul Easter drove a Mini Cooper S to outright victory in January 1965, defeating larger and more powerful competitors including the Porsche 904 and Saab 96 Sport.
The result marked the Mini’s second consecutive Monte Carlo victory after its surprise win in 1964, demonstrating that the earlier result was no fluke.
The Mini Cooper S benefited from its small size, light weight and go-kart handling on the rally’s narrow, icy mountain roads. The victory helped cement the Mini’s reputation as a giant killer and became a cornerstone of the brand’s identity.
The following year brought another memorable chapter. Mini cars finished first, second and third at the 1966 rally but were disqualified following a dispute over headlight regulations. MINI returned to outright victory in 1967, giving the marque four notable Monte Carlo results within a single decade, including three wins and the contested 1966 finish.
MINI Brings the 1965 Livery Into 2026
The new MINI 1965 Victory Edition brings the look of the 1965 rally car to MINI’s current lineup. The model is finished in Chili Red, a color closely associated with the era’s works rally cars, and features a Glazed White roof and mirror caps.
A white stripe stretches across the bonnet, roof and tailgate, while the number “52” appears prominently on the body. That was the race number carried by Mäkinen and Easter’s winning car. A discreet “1965” decal on the C-pillar provides another reference to the anniversary.
Edition-specific wheel hub caps and valve caps are also included. Buyers can choose from two 18-inch alloy wheel designs: JCW Lap Spoke two-tone wheels for the combustion models or JCW Mastery Spoke black wheels for the electric version.
Historic Details Continue Inside
The tribute extends into the cabin with “1965” lettering on the door sills and a dedication printed on the inside of the driver’s door. Matching lettering appears on the steering wheel and center console storage box.
The interior uses the familiar anthracite-and-red JCW cabin treatment, while even the key cap carries the historic racing number.
Three Powertrains Available
MINI is offering the 1965 Victory Edition across three drivetrains, giving buyers multiple performance options while keeping the same heritage-inspired design.
- MINI Cooper S: A 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder producing around 204 hp.
- MINI John Cooper Works: The brand’s hottest combustion hatch, producing roughly 231 hp.
- MINI John Cooper Works Electric: An all-electric JCW producing around 258 hp and offering the quickest acceleration of the three.
The edition does not receive mechanical changes. There is no rally-specific suspension tune, limited-slip differential or shortened gearing. Instead, the focus is on visual styling and exclusivity.
U.S. Pricing and Availability
The 1965 Victory Edition began rolling out globally in March 2026, with European markets following in July.
In the United States, the edition is offered on the two-door John Cooper Works hatchback, with pricing starting at roughly $46,220 before destination and handling fees. That represents a premium of around $7,300 over a standard two-door JCW.
For MINI, the 1965 Victory Edition provides current owners with a tangible connection to one of the brand’s defining motorsport moments, when a small car defeated the world’s best on the winter roads of the 1965 Monte Carlo Rally.
