The Volkswagen ID. Buzz California Cruise finally gives enthusiasts the official electric camper van they have wanted, adding sleeping and camping equipment to the ID. Buzz Pro. But while the California Cruise is launching in Germany, Volkswagen is not bringing this version to the U.S. just yet.
What the ID. Buzz California Cruise Offers
The California Cruise is based on the ID. Buzz Pro and adds equipment designed to turn the van into a practical place to sleep. The package includes a mattress, a fold-out table with two chairs and blackout coverage for every window.
It also introduces a dedicated “California mode” that keeps the van’s power, lighting and climate control operating while it is parked and unplugged. Volkswagen rates the system for 48 hours of continuous HVAC use on a full charge.
An electrochromic glass roof completes the package. With the touch of a button, the roof can switch between opaque and transparent.
Pricing is roughly $70,000 for a short-wheelbase Buzz Pro equipped with a 79-kWh battery rated for up to 285 miles of range. That version of the ID. Buzz is not offered in the U.S. in any form.
Why Germany Gets the California Cruise First
Germany is the launch market for the ID. Buzz California Cruise. Volkswagen has sold camper versions of its vans under the California nameplate for decades, dating back to the Transporter.
The European launch also comes after Volkswagen paused ID. Buzz production entirely for the 2026 model year following the van’s struggle to compete with gas-powered rivals such as the Toyota Sienna and Kia Carnival. Both models undercut the ID. Buzz by roughly $20,000.
For Volkswagen, introducing a European-market camper based on an established platform is a lower-risk move than creating a new U.S.-only trim for a van that is still finding its footing in the American market.
When the ID. Buzz Camper Comes to the U.S.
The California Cruise itself is not the American answer, but Volkswagen has confirmed that a camping-focused “Tourer” trim is planned for the ID. Buzz’s 2027 return to the U.S.
The U.S. version will borrow the same fold-out mattress concept used in Europe’s “Good Night Package.”
The current U.S. long-wheelbase ID. Buzz already starts just over $60,000. That makes the California Cruise’s roughly $70,000 price a potential benchmark for the upcoming camping-focused trim, although Volkswagen’s actual U.S. pricing has yet to be established.
For enthusiasts who have waited years for an official ID. Buzz camper, Volkswagen’s California Cruise delivers the concept in Europe first, while the American market remains set for a separate camping-focused version.
