The upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is being developed as a road-legal version of the brand’s GT3 race car, with an official reveal planned next year before production begins for 2028. Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius has offered an unusually confident assessment of the highly anticipated supercar, promising a model that will be dramatically different from expectations.
Mercedes-AMG CEO Promises a Radical Black Series
Källenius made his comments in a recent interview with Autocar, emphasizing the freedom Mercedes-AMG engineers have been given during development.
“Sometimes you must allow the engineers to go crazy, and the next car like that is in the making,” he said.
He went further when discussing the next AMG Black Series, saying, “The next AMG Black Series will be insane, and it will be something completely different that nobody expects.” Källenius added that he could guarantee readers would love the car, calling it his “personal guarantee.”
What to Expect From the Next AMG GT Black Series
The car’s technical specifications have not been officially detailed, meaning any discussion of its mechanical characteristics remains speculative. It will likely feature a flat-plane-crank V8 and considerably more power than the GT 63 Pro currently offers.
That would also put significant pressure on AMG to surpass the previous Black Series’ 720 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. The engineers at AMG are expected to face the challenge of finding a way to deliver even greater performance.
Nürburgring Record Could Be a Major Target
Another likely objective for the next-generation Black Series is a Nürburgring lap record. In November 2020, the previous GT Black Series completed the Green Hell’s full 20.832-kilometer track in 6 minutes, 48.047 seconds.
That result made it the fastest front-engine, rear-wheel-drive production car to ever attempt the Nordschleife record, a distinction it still holds today.
Ford could challenge that achievement with its new GTD Competition. The winged Mustang has already completed a 6:40 lap in pre-production form, beating the previous Black Series’ time. That leaves AMG engineers with another benchmark to consider as they work to make the next GT even faster.
GT Black Series Takes Design Cues From the GT3
From what can currently be seen, the upcoming car looks very similar to the track-only GT3. Its appearance features aggressive bodywork, a generous front lip spoiler and a large rear wing mounted on swan-neck struts.
The road-legal model also rides slightly higher off the ground to better suit driving conditions on public roads.
Mercedes-AMG Is Betting on the New Black Series
Källenius’ comments signal strong confidence in the future AMG GT Black Series despite the development challenges involved in creating such a performance-focused car. Mercedes appears determined to give its engineers the freedom to pursue the project without letting development costs or other financial considerations define the outcome.
The result is expected to be revealed next year ahead of production scheduled for 2028, with Mercedes-AMG positioning the next Black Series as something substantially different from what enthusiasts might expect.
