The upcoming 2028 Lotus Esprit is set to offer two engine options, with sources reporting that a V6 hybrid will join the previously confirmed V8 hybrid. The smaller powertrain could give Lotus a lighter and more affordable version of its new sports car while helping the brand meet its weight and emissions targets.

Lotus Esprit Expected With V6 and V8 Hybrids

Lotus recently announced that the Esprit will receive two engine options. The V8 hybrid was confirmed first, but sources now report that the new 2028 Esprit will also be available with a V6 hybrid.

The development comes as Lotus continues to balance its traditional focus on lightweight sports cars with its newer emphasis on higher power. The brand has set a goal of keeping the vehicle below 3,306 lbs (1,500 kg), following criticism surrounding a misunderstanding involving its CEO, who said that sports cars above that weight target “are mediocre.”

Lotus CEO Feng Qingfeng disclosed the V6 option during an earnings call with company investors on August 27, 2026, according to Autocar.

V6 Hybrid Could Make the Esprit Lighter

The V6 hybrid could use the same powertrain as the Emira. That setup features a 3-liter engine displacement, twin turbos and a lightweight electric motor, with likely power figures of 536 horsepower and 536 ft-lbs of torque.

By comparison, peak combined power for the V8 version of the new Esprit is said to approach the 1,000-horsepower mark. The V6 version would be significantly lighter than the V8, giving Lotus more room to work within its weight target and emissions constraints.

The powertrain is under Geely. Horse creates the V6 and V8 engines, and the brand has also faced significant challenges in keeping the Esprit’s weight as low as possible, particularly with the V8 version.

A Shift for the Lotus Esprit

Lotus has historically approached performance by prioritizing lower weight, with adding power taking less of a central role. Under new management, that philosophy has shifted somewhat as the brand has placed greater emphasis on horsepower.

The V6 hybrid could provide a way for Lotus to retain more of its lightweight approach while still delivering a higher-performance sports car. Offering the V6 alongside the V8 gives the upcoming Esprit two distinct powertrain choices.

Lotus Reworked the Type 135 Project

The Type 135 project was initially planned as an all-electric supercar. Lotus later returned to the drawing board after realigning the project with the characteristics that made the brand special.

Lotus is also among the brands that have revised their views on electrification. Internal combustion engines are expected to remain in the near future, providing a different path for the upcoming Esprit.

The new Lotus Esprit is scheduled to launch in 2028, with the V6 hybrid joining the V8 as the two reported engine options. The smaller powertrain could also help Lotus address the weight and emissions challenges associated with the new sports car.
