The Porsche Octan, the expected combustion-powered successor to the Porsche Macan, is making significant progress as new spy shots reveal an updated development mule undergoing testing. Although the prototype resembles an Audi Q5, it is being used as a test bed for Porsche’s upcoming luxury crossover.

Porsche Appears to Settle on the Octan Name

The Porsche Macan was once one of the brand’s best-selling products, but sales plunged after it transitioned to an EV without a combustion-powered alternative. Porsche is now working on a replacement intended to address that gap.

Previous reports from spies who overheard internal references to the vehicle suggested two possible names: “Cajun” and “Octan.” More recently, however, only the latter name has been heard in connection with the gas Macan successor.

Porsche Octan Mule Shows New Design Details

Porsche has previously used Audi-bodied development mules for crossover testing, but this prototype has evolved from earlier examples. Its new grille design appears more aligned with Porsche styling than Audi’s.

The front end features two grille openings positioned one above the other, with each divided through the middle. Porsche could add mesh to protect radiators and other cooling components from road debris, although the final design remains unclear.

Other visible clues include added wheel-arch extensions and a dual-exhaust setup. The wider arches appear to support comments from Porsche CEO Michael Leiters, who said the Macan replacement would continue sharing a platform with Audi while remaining a “real” Porsche, including a wider track intended to improve handling ability.

Electrified Engines Expected on New Platform

The new luxury crossover will use the Premium Platform Combustion architecture, which can accommodate a range of electrified powertrains.

Four-cylinder engines and V6s are expected, all paired with all-wheel drive, while some versions could feature plug-in hybrid systems. The PHEV models are expected to offer more than 62 miles of all-electric driving.

Porsche may also introduce another body style to improve profitability, potentially resembling the Audi Q5 Sportback.

Porsche Octan Could Debut in 2027

The relatively rapid development of the Macan replacement, along with reports from regions where the Octan has been spotted testing, has led spies to believe that nearly finished prototypes could appear “by winter at the latest.”

This latest mule is undergoing hot-weather testing in Spain and features a new front-end design, supporting expectations of a full debut sometime in the first half of 2027. However, it is also possible that the Octan could launch later next year as a 2028 model-year vehicle.

For now, the latest testing images suggest Porsche is moving steadily toward the arrival of its combustion-powered Macan successor, with the Porsche Octan name increasingly appearing to be the one attached to the upcoming crossover.
