Volkswagen is exploring a dedicated North American strategy that could bring rugged body-on-frame SUVs and pickup trucks to the U.S. market, potentially putting the automaker in competition with vehicles such as the Toyota Tacoma, 4Runner and Ford Bronco.

Volkswagen Targets North American Opportunities

Volkswagen’s new American boss, Marco Schubert, has taken over from Kjell Grunner after just two years at a particularly difficult moment for the automaker. Government guidance has become inconsistent, while the market has moved away from the electric-car revolution that Volkswagen and other automakers had heavily invested in.

Schubert needs a win, and one of his first priorities could be a new product strategy focused specifically on North America.

In a series of announcements last week, Volkswagen said it would pursue North American opportunities in a manner similar to its strategies for China and Europe. The company stated that, “In line with its ‘In China, for China’ and ‘In Europe, for Europe’ strategies, Volkswagen will also pursue a dedicated North America strategy.”

Volkswagen Considers Rugged SUVs and Pickups

As part of that strategy, Volkswagen said it will explore opportunities in the highly popular body-on-frame B-segment, including robust SUVs and pickup trucks, as a potential part of its future product portfolio.

The statement does not guarantee that Volkswagen will launch new off-road models. But the automaker is considering the segment as demand for rugged vehicles continues to create opportunities for manufacturers.

The resurgence of models such as the Land Cruiser, the Ford Bronco’s sales performance against the Wrangler, and Nissan’s confirmation of a new Xterra have highlighted the opportunity Volkswagen could pursue.

Volkswagen Already Has Pickup Experience

Volkswagen is not new to building pickup trucks. Beyond its older Type 1 and Type 2 trucks, the company has more recently produced the midsize Amarok.

The first-generation Amarok was built in-house by Volkswagen and was described as an over-engineered truck that was capable and significantly more luxurious than rivals in the global market.

The second-generation Amarok took a different approach. Volkswagen partnered with Ford and shared the Ranger’s underlying architecture and engines. However, the Amarok was never sold in the United States because of the Chicken Tax.

Volkswagen has officially teased a third-generation Amarok that is believed to no longer share its underpinnings with Ford. However, reports cited in the original article say that this truck is not expected to be the model brought to North America.

Scout Could Give Volkswagen an Advantage

If Volkswagen moves forward with a North American body-on-frame vehicle, it would need local American manufacturing because the Chicken Tax makes importing pickup trucks subject to tariffs that can render them unviable for the local market.

That challenge could also give Volkswagen an advantage over automakers starting from scratch. The company has the revived Scout brand and a significant investment in Rivian.

Rivian’s role is primarily tied to software, but the company has also established itself in the American off-roading scene and could provide Volkswagen with insights as it considers how to enter the segment.

Scout may be even more important to Volkswagen’s plans. The Scout Terra pickup and Traveler SUV use a rugged body-on-frame architecture, giving the Volkswagen Group an existing platform that could potentially support additional vehicles.

Scout Platform Could Support Multiple Brands

The Scout vehicles are primarily electric, but patent filings, including one detailing the placement of a range-extender engine, indicate that the platform is highly versatile.

The platform has also reportedly been selected by Audi for its own rugged rival to the Mercedes G-Class. For Volkswagen Group, using a common architecture across Volkswagen, Audi, Scout and potentially other brands could create economies of scale and make it easier to bring new vehicles to market.

More Automakers Are Entering the Rugged Segment

The broader automotive market is already oversaturated, prompting automakers to consolidate their lineups and eliminate models that do not generate sufficient returns. But the emergence of a new high-demand segment can create an opportunity for companies that move early.

The growth of rugged body-on-frame vehicles has exceeded expectations, with the Bronco and Land Cruiser demonstrating room for additional models.

Nissan is developing a new Xterra, while Mitsubishi’s new Pajero is likely to produce an American counterpart reviving the Montero nameplate. Hyundai is also reportedly entering the segment, with the Boulder Concept previewing an American pickup that is believed to eventually receive an SUV version.

Kia could then leverage that architecture for its own rugged models. At the higher end of the market, Audi and Genesis are seeking to challenge the G-Class, while BMW could also enter the segment.

Volkswagen Sees an Opening in North America

Volkswagen’s potential move into rugged body-on-frame SUVs and pickups remains under investigation rather than a confirmed product program. But the automaker’s Scout platform and Rivian investment could provide resources that competitors entering the segment from scratch do not have.

With Volkswagen pursuing a dedicated North American strategy, the company is now considering whether rugged SUVs and pickups could become part of its future product portfolio.
