The potential Hyundai Tucson N could give U.S. buyers a new performance-focused option in one of the country’s most lucrative vehicle segments. Reports indicate the model would also mark a major step for Hyundai N as the performance division moves toward hybrid technology.

Hyundai Tucson N Could Expand the N Lineup

Performance variants have traditionally been associated with coupes, sedans and hatchbacks, but the growing popularity of crossovers and SUVs has expanded the market for high-performance utility vehicles. Lamborghini helped broaden that field with the Urus in 2017, while models such as the Aston Martin DBX707 occupy the luxury end of the segment.

That makes reports of a possible Hyundai Tucson N particularly notable. According to Auto Express, the Tucson N would be one of the key models in Hyundai N’s broader expansion and could serve as the starting point for the division’s transition to hybrid technology.

The Tucson already has mainstream appeal, competing with vehicles such as the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V. A standalone performance version could therefore bring Hyundai N’s performance-focused approach to a wider audience while retaining seating for five occupants.

Hybrid System Could Focus on Performance

While hybrid powertrains can improve fuel efficiency, Joon Park, Hyundai’s vice president of the N Management Group, told Auto Express that the hybrid systems used in N-badged models would take a different approach, with an emphasis on power delivery.

Hyundai has not released official output figures for the potential Tucson N. Auto Express estimates that the model could produce between 300 and 350 horsepower.

The possible performance SUV could also feature all-wheel drive, adaptive suspension, larger wheels and tires, and upgraded brakes.

Fifth-Generation Tucson Sets the Stage

With the all-new, fifth-generation Tucson recently unveiled, the timing could provide Hyundai an opportunity to explore a true performance variant in the compact-crossover segment.

The potential Tucson N would also present a design challenge. The Tucson’s boxier appearance contrasts with the low-slung proportions typically associated with sports cars, leaving the design team to determine how those elements would come together in an N-badged model.

The distinction between a sporty trim and a full performance derivative is significant. The Toyota RAV4 GR Sport, for example, receives suspension, steering and rigidity upgrades, but it is not a full GR model in the same way as the GR Corolla.

Hyundai N Expansion Has Seven New Models

Auto Express did not provide a timeline for the possible Hyundai Tucson N. However, the next-generation model is expected to arrive in the U.S. next year.

If the performance-oriented Tucson becomes reality, it would join Hyundai N’s broader expansion, which includes seven new models. Another expected addition is a small N-badged EV positioned below the Ioniq 5 N.

That electric model is estimated to cost between $35,000 and $45,000. It could provide a more accessible option combining sporty driving characteristics with the instant torque of an all-electric powertrain.

The possible Hyundai Tucson N would represent another step in the expansion of Hyundai N, combining the Tucson’s practical five-person capacity with a performance-oriented approach and a hybrid system designed with power delivery in mind.
