Honda has become the first company to receive a five-star FIA Road Safety Index rating under the organization’s tougher 2026 framework, earning the top score in the products and services category.

Why Honda Earned Five Stars

The FIA Road Safety Index, which focuses on how companies approach road safety rather than the crash protection of individual vehicles, began in 2022 with a maximum three-star rating. For 2026, the FIA expanded the system to five stars and introduced tougher requirements.

Honda had already made history with the Index, becoming the first automaker to receive its top rating in February last year. At that time, Honda earned a three-star rating for its operations in Japan.

Under the new five-star framework, Honda submitted operations across 17 countries, covering more than 90% of its global motorcycle and car sales, for evaluation by the FIA.

The FIA highlighted several areas that helped Honda achieve the five-star rating. These included long-term safety planning with executive-level involvement, global monitoring of crashes and injuries involving Honda vehicles, safety targets overseen by a dedicated global safety council, the introduction of more advanced safety technology, and greater transparency around traffic safety data.

Honda’s Safety for Everyone Plan

Honda’s efforts are part of its broader “Safety for Everyone” plan, which aims to reduce traffic deaths involving Honda cars and motorcycles by half by 2030 compared with 2020.

The company’s longer-term goal is to reach zero fatalities by 2050.

Honda received the five-star award alongside the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

How the FIA Road Safety Index Works

The FIA Road Safety Index does not measure how well a specific vehicle performs in a crash. Instead, it evaluates how an entire company approaches road safety across its operations.

The Index includes two ratings. The Supply Chain Rating examines safety from the factory floor through delivery trucks, while the Products and Services Rating evaluates the safety of the products and services a company sells.

Honda’s five-star achievement came in the products and services category.

What Changed in the 2026 Framework

According to the FIA, the expanded five-star framework goes beyond the original three-star model by adding assessment areas focused on planning, safety performance monitoring and safety culture management, alongside product or supply chain coverage.

The FIA says the expanded framework is designed to encourage organizations to make road safety a measurable part of their operations rather than treating it as a standalone initiative.

Honda’s five-star rating makes it the first company to reach the highest level under the FIA Road Safety Index’s new 2026 framework.
