The Toyota GR GT is being shaped directly by the GT3 race car developed alongside it, with the two prototypes recently sharing Laguna Seca in matching liveries. The road car leads early while the winged racer closes in, offering a clear look at where Toyota sees its new flagship belonging.
Toyota GR GT Takes Cues From Its GT3 Racer
The GR GT uses a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 paired with an electric motor, sending power through an eight-speed transaxle to the rear wheels only. Preliminary figures stand at 641 hp and 627 lb-ft, although Toyota says those numbers, along with the car’s weight and top speed, could still change before production.
Toyota is also using lessons from the GT3 race car to influence the development of the road-going GR GT, creating a notably direct transfer of motorsport technology to a street car priced above $225,000.
Spy shots from the Nürburgring have revealed a more hardcore GR GT prototype that may wear an RS badge. The prototype features a larger front splitter, a swan-neck rear wing and louvered fender vents similar to those found on the GT3 car.
The approach shows Toyota applying track-focused developments from the GT3 racer to a hotter version of its road car. Mercedes-AMG is readying a Black Series GT, while Porsche’s next GT3 RS may go turbo.
US Allocation Is Already Spoken For
For buyers hoping to get behind the wheel, availability is already a major hurdle. The Toyota GR GT starts at more than $225,000, but having the money is not enough to secure one.
Toyota has confirmed that its entire U.S. allocation has already been spoken for, with between 200 and 250 cars planned. According to the source, that limited allocation is intentional, as executives want owners who will actually drive the cars rather than flippers looking to cash out.
More than 150 hopeful buyers reportedly sat down to spec their dream GR GT at Monterey Car Week before Toyota was even accepting orders.
Even as Toyota continues showing the GR GT lapping test tracks on its own social media, demand for the limited-production road car has already put prospective owners in line.
