The Defender Wolf Series II is being positioned as the next-generation replacement for the military workhorse that has served the British armed forces since 1997, as the UK Ministry of Defence prepares to phase out its current Defender Wolf fleet by 2030.

Defender Wolf Series II Targets Military Service

Land Rover’s relationship with the British Army dates back 77 years. Since 1997, the Defender Wolf has served in a wide range of roles, transporting personnel and cargo, carrying tactical communications equipment and weapon mounts, and operating as a battlefield ambulance for medical evacuation.

The Defender Wolf has also seen combat in Iraq and Afghanistan while taking part in peacekeeping missions around the world. With the existing fleet approaching the end of its service life, Defender has now unveiled the Wolf Series II as its proposed successor.

Defender hopes to secure another contract with the UK Ministry of Defence through its Light Mobility Vehicle (LMV) tender. While detailed specifications remain under wraps, the Wolf Series II uses monocoque construction and is based on Defender’s D7x architecture.

More Than 62,000 Tests for Engineering Sign-Off

The new military vehicle was engineered for demanding conditions and successfully completed what JLR calls the Extreme Event Test procedure.

Defender says the Wolf Series II underwent more than 62,000 tests as part of its engineering sign-off process.

“The Defender Wolf Series II is our next generation military vehicle,” says Defender managing director Patrick McGillycuddy. “British design and engineered with pioneering off-road technologies and an engine built in Wolverhampton.”

Four Versions of the Wolf Series II

The Defender Wolf Series II will be offered in four distinct configurations:

  • General mobility vehicle
  • Tactical mobility vehicle
  • Battlefield ambulance
  • Utility vehicle

The vehicles are due to appear at this year’s British Army DVD, which will be held at the Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire from September 16–17.

“Defender already demonstrates its versatility in tough roles for emergency organizations around the world, such as border force, mountain rescue, police, and fire,” said McGillycuddy.

Will the Wolf Series II Join the British Army?

Despite Defender’s long-standing relationship with the UK military, the Wolf Series II has not yet secured a place in British Army service. The vehicle must still go through a selection process as part of the Ministry of Defence’s evaluation.

Defender does have a positive result from testing to point to. During a demonstration at the MOD’s testing grounds, the Series II was the only vehicle to successfully navigate every obstacle it encountered.

The Unibody Design Could Be a Challenge

Although the Wolf Series II appears to be a natural successor to earlier military Defenders, its construction introduces an important difference. Military trucks are typically built using truck-based body-on-frame platforms, and previous Defenders also used this type of construction.

The new Defender, however, is a unibody SUV, meaning its body and chassis form a single structure.

That distinction can matter in military environments, where damage to a vehicle’s body is considered likely. With a separate frame, body damage can remain superficial and may be repaired by replacing damaged sections of the body.

With a unibody vehicle, severe impacts can potentially damage the chassis itself, weakening the structure in a way that cannot be repaired as easily.

That difference could be one of the factors considered as the Defender Wolf Series II continues through the evaluation process for potential British military service.
