Ferrari has unveiled the 296 GT Modificata, a limited-series, track-only model designed to operate without competition restrictions. Built for wealthy track-day customers, the new Ferrari takes performance beyond the 296 GT3 Evo and is claimed to have the potential to lap Italy’s Fiorano circuit three seconds faster.

Ferrari 296 GT Modificata Pushes Beyond GT3 Rules

The 296 GT Modificata builds on the 296 GT3 Evo, which competes in major racing series including the World Endurance Championship (WEC). Unlike the competition car, however, the new model is aimed at customers who want to use it on the track without racing restrictions.

Ferrari has given the car a two-seat configuration, allowing a coach or passenger to ride alongside the driver. The automaker says the track-only model could complete a lap of the Fiorano circuit three seconds faster than the 296 GT3 Evo.

A More Powerful Twin-Turbo V6

Ferrari achieved the additional performance through extensive changes to the powertrain. Modifications include the crank train, camshafts, intake system, intercoolers and turbochargers, while the fuel system has been optimized to handle increased flow demands.

The enhanced 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 produces 730 cv, or about 720 horsepower, according to Ferrari. That is roughly 120 hp more than the 600-hp output quoted for the GT3 Evo, whose power is subject to Balance of Performance restrictions.

The engine is paired with a six-speed sequential gearbox featuring revised gear ratios.

Reworked Aerodynamics and Cooling

Ferrari has also revised the bodywork to increase downforce while improving cooling for the additional components.

At the front, a new hood features a larger main opening to help manage hot air leaving the radiator. A slotted splitter improves airflow beneath the car and increases downforce, while additional cooling provisions support the upgraded brakes.

At the rear, the Ferrari receives a new tailpipe design and a redesigned wing featuring a 5-mm Gurney flap. The wing’s endplates draw inspiration from the Le Mans-winning 499P, which also has a Modificata version intended for customers using it on the track outside competitive racing.

Built for Track-Day Data and Development

The Ferrari 296 GT Modificata also comes equipped with data acquisition and onboard video systems. These tools can help drivers analyze their laps and identify areas where they can improve.

Ferrari 296 GT Modificata Pricing and Availability

Ferrari has not disclosed pricing for the 296 GT Modificata. The model is intended exclusively for members of the Club Competizioni GT program.

Purchasing the car includes two years, or 12 rounds, of participation in the program.

For comparison, the road-going 296 GTB starts at more than $330,000 in the U.S. The GT Modificata is therefore expected to carry an even higher price.
