The Tesla Roadster is finally set for an official reveal on October 1 after years of delays, but customers looking to reserve the long-awaited performance EV will have to commit significant money before production even begins.
Tesla Roadster Reservations Cost $50,000
Tesla has started sending invitations to current reservation holders, while new customers can once again reserve the second-generation Roadster through the manufacturer’s website.
The reservation requires an immediate $5,000 fee, which is fully refundable. Customers must then pay another $45,000 within 10 days through a wire transfer to finalize the reservation.
The same $50,000 reservation fee was originally offered closer to the Roadster’s initial announcement. Years later, those early buyers are still waiting for the car.
Roadster Expected to Cost $200,000
The Tesla Roadster is expected to carry a total price of $200,000, which would make it Tesla’s most expensive model by a wide margin.
For comparison, the company’s current most expensive model is the Cyberbeast, which starts at $99,990 — roughly half the expected price of the Roadster.
Tesla Roadster Specs Still Face Questions
Several of Tesla’s claimed Roadster specifications remain as ambitious as they were when first announced. The company has cited a top speed of more than 250 mph, a range of 620 miles and a 0-60 mph time of less than two seconds.
The claimed range would be supported by a large 200-kWh battery. Elon Musk has also hinted at technologies such as cold gas thrusters from SpaceX that could potentially allow the car to hover or even fly.
October 1 Reveal Could Clarify Tesla’s Plans
The Roadster’s official reveal on October 1 is expected to provide a clearer picture of the long-delayed performance EV. However, the project has faced so many delays that questions remain about its eventual launch.
The Cybertruck followed a similar path, with Tesla previewing the vehicle for years before it eventually went on sale. The electric truck ultimately proved less popular than expected.
Roadster Production Could Still Be Years Away
The reopened reservation program provides Tesla with additional working capital as the company moves toward launching the Roadster. However, production is only expected to begin in 2027 or 2028.
That timeline means customers who reserve the Tesla Roadster now could still be waiting for some time before the performance EV reaches their garages.
