The 2027 Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon are getting a significant power upgrade, with both trucks set to receive GM’s L4B engine. The new 2.7-liter turbocharged engine increases output from 310 horsepower to 350 horsepower and delivers 455 lb-ft of torque.
Colorado and Canyon Get the L4B Engine
According to an ordering guide obtained by Auto Evolution, both the Colorado and Canyon will receive the L4B engine for 2027. The change gives the smaller GM trucks the same newer engine that was originally slated for the larger Silverado and Sierra models.
The L4B brings more than additional power. The engine also features an enhanced turbocharger, updated active thermal management, improved NVH levels, upgraded fuel injection and redesigned pistons.
Despite sharing the engine, the smaller trucks will differ from their larger siblings in one key area. While the Silverado and Sierra will use a 10-speed automatic transmission, the Colorado and Canyon will continue with an 8-speed automatic.
2027 Colorado and Canyon Towing Capacity
The additional power does not change the trucks’ stated towing capabilities. Both the Colorado and Canyon will retain a maximum towing capacity of 7,700 pounds.
The more off-road-focused versions will also maintain their existing towing ratings. The ZR2 and AT4X are rated to tow up to 6,000 pounds, while the Bison and AEV can pull up to 5,500 pounds.
More Power Puts GM Trucks Among V6 Rivals
The updated L4B TurboMax remains an inline four-cylinder engine, but its 350 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque move the Colorado and Canyon into competition with V6 and hybridized powertrains.
Ford’s Raptor remains ahead with a 405-horsepower V6, while Toyota’s i-FORCE MAX engine produces 326 horsepower. The updated GM trucks sit between the two in terms of horsepower.
More 2027 Colorado and Canyon Updates
The power increase is not the only change planned for the 2027 Colorado and Canyon. The trucks will also receive a range of additional upgrades, including changes aimed at improving standard equipment.
Other updates will focus on exterior paint choices and wheel options as GM continues updating its smaller pickup trucks for the 2027 model year.
