The 2027 BMW X5 40 xDrive carries a significantly higher price in Australia than in the U.S., with the same gasoline-powered SUV costing about US$31,800 more before accounting for differences in equipment, taxes and country-specific costs.

2027 BMW X5 Price Difference

BMW Australia offers the 2027 X5 in both gasoline and diesel 40 xDrive variants. The gasoline model is priced at AU$145,900 (US$103,900), while the diesel version costs AU$143,900 (US$102,500).

In the U.S., buyers receive only the gasoline-powered 40 xDrive, which starts at US$72,100. The Australian petrol model is therefore around US$31,800 more expensive than its American counterpart.

Both versions use the same 3-liter inline-six engine, producing 394 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque.

Australian 2027 BMW X5 Comes Better Equipped

The price difference is not simply a matter of BMW charging Australian buyers more. BMW Australia offers the 2027 X5 in two variants: M Sport and M Sport Package Pro, with M Sport serving as the standard trim.

For AU$145,900, Australian buyers receive equipment including adaptive M suspension, M Sport roof rails, M Sport brakes with blue-painted calipers and 21-inch polygon-style alloy wheels.

The interior also includes M-themed black and Atlas Grey interiors, an M Sport steering wheel and M-specific welcome carpet lights.

Buyers who choose the M Sport Pro package pay an additional AU$3,775. The package adds larger 22-inch alloy wheels, red-painted brake calipers and M-style seatbelts.

The Australian-spec X5 also comes with ventilated and massaging front seats, an 18-speaker Bowers and Wilkins sound system and a heated steering wheel.

U.S. Buyers Pay Extra for Similar Features

Those features and design packages are not standard on the U.S.-spec 2027 BMW X5. American buyers can add the M Sport package for US$3,250, while the M Sport Pro Package costs an additional US$4,550.

Ventilated and massaging front seats and a heated steering wheel are available through the Climate Package, which costs another US$2,800.

The Bowers & Wilkins sound system requires the Technology Package, adding another US$1,450 to the price.

Taxes Add to the Price Gap

Taxation also plays a major role in the difference between the Australian and American prices.

In Australia, new-car purchases are subject to a 10 percent Goods and Services Tax (GST). More expensive vehicles that exceed the threshold can also be subject to a 33 percent Luxury Car Tax (LCT) on part of the vehicle’s value.

The LCT threshold is AU$91,661 for fuel-efficient vehicles and AU$80,809 for all other luxury vehicles. The tax is intended to discourage Australian car buyers from purchasing less fuel-efficient vehicles.

Australian buyers also face registration charges and stamp duties.

The U.S. has no federal equivalent to Australia’s LCT. Instead, buyers generally pay state and local sales taxes, with rates varying according to where the vehicle is purchased and registered.

The resulting price difference between the 2027 BMW X5 40 xDrive in Australia and the U.S. reflects not only differences in standard equipment but also the different tax structures and country-specific costs applied to vehicle purchases.
