Subaru is preparing to reveal new 2027 WRX and BRZ variants at Boxerfest in Pennsylvania on Sunday, September 27. The automaker describes both vehicles as “limited-production, enthusiast-focused” models, pointing to new versions aimed at performance-minded buyers in the U.S. market.
Subaru Teases New WRX and BRZ Models
Subaru’s announcement provides only limited details, offering glimpses of the new WRX’s rear end while confirming that both models are based on the 2027 model years of the WRX and BRZ.
The teaser images suggest the new vehicles could be updates to the existing WRX tS and BRZ tS. However, the WRX teaser shows a large carbon fiber rear wing that has not previously been seen on the WRX tS.
Subaru could also introduce additional aerodynamic changes elsewhere on the body, although the automaker has not provided details about those potential upgrades.
WRX Performance Details Remain Unclear
The current WRX produces 271 horsepower from a 2.4-liter turbocharged flat-four engine. That engine is paired with a six-speed manual transmission that sends power to all four wheels.
There is no indication that Subaru will increase the engine’s 271-horsepower output for the new variant. The teaser instead points toward potential exterior and aerodynamic changes.
The BRZ is expected to follow a similar approach. Despite some customers calling for more power, the new BRZ tS is not expected to receive turbocharging, although Subaru could introduce new aerodynamic upgrades.
Could Subaru Add More Performance Upgrades?
It is also possible that Subaru could use the launch of the limited-production models to introduce new factory-backed aftermarket upgrades. However, the automaker has not revealed what additional equipment or performance parts may be included.
The full details of the new WRX and BRZ variants are expected to be revealed at Boxerfest on Sunday.
New Models Could Expand Subaru’s Performance Lineup
Subaru has also been pursuing a broader return to performance-focused vehicles. The automaker has created a team dedicated to building more exciting cars, filed trademarks that appear intended for new STI models and revealed the Performance-B STI Concept, which will enter production for the Japanese market using the WRX as its foundation.
The upcoming U.S. WRX and BRZ variants add to that activity, although Subaru has not confirmed whether either model represents a return of the STI nameplate in the American market.
With the second-generation BRZ approaching its sixth year on sale, a new limited-production edition would provide an update for the sports coupe, while the WRX has continued to provide a bright spot for Subaru on U.S. sales charts.
