BMW Leads J.D. Power APEAL Study With Six Segment Wins

BMW delivered the strongest performance of any automaker in the latest J.D. Power APEAL Study, earning six segment victories across its lineup. The BMW X6 and BMW 7 Series also tied as the highest-ranked individual vehicles in the study, outperforming every other model sold in the United States regardless of price or vehicle class.

BMW Dominates the Latest J.D. Power APEAL Rankings

BMW’s winning lineup included the X2, X6, 2 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series, while the MINI Countryman also claimed a segment victory.

The BMW X6 secured its segment title for the second consecutive year, while the MINI Countryman extended its winning streak to four straight years in its class.

In addition to their segment victories, the X6 and 7 Series tied as the highest-ranked individual models in the study, placing ahead of every other vehicle evaluated in the U.S. market.

What the J.D. Power APEAL Study Measures

The J.D. Power APEAL Study measures how much owners enjoy their vehicles after approximately 90 days of ownership. The evaluation is based on 37 attributes covering areas such as comfort, design, infotainment, and cupholder placement.

Unlike the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study, which measures reported problems, the APEAL Study focuses on owner satisfaction and the overall ownership experience.

Porsche Remains the Highest-Ranked Premium Brand

Porsche ranked highest overall among premium brands for the third consecutive year with a score of 896. The result was driven by owners of the Porsche 911, which also earned its own segment award this year.

BMW’s individual model scores were not published in the study’s release. However, the X6 sharing the highest overall model ranking with the 7 Series underscored its strong performance among owners.

Gap Between Premium and Mass-Market Brands Continues to Narrow

According to J.D. Power, the emotional satisfaction gap between premium brands, excluding Tesla, and mass-market brands narrowed to 29 points, down from 66 points in 2008.

The study found that infotainment systems, exterior styling, driver-assistance features, and even the sound of closing a vehicle’s doors no longer distinguish premium vehicles from mass-market models as strongly as they once did.

Industry Satisfaction Reaches Its Highest Gain Since 2018

Overall industry satisfaction increased by seven points to 858, marking the third consecutive annual improvement and the largest year-over-year increase since 2018.

J.D. Power attributed much of the increase to interior improvements, which rose by an average of 11 points due to better storage solutions, cupholder design, and phone placement. Exterior styling and ease of entry each improved by 10 points.

The study also found that newly launched vehicles have scored only slightly higher than the carryover models they replace for the fifth consecutive year. New premium vehicles scored three points lower than their carryover counterparts, a trend J.D. Power attributed in part to infotainment systems and setup challenges in newly launched models.

BMW Posts the Study’s Strongest Overall Performance

Despite broader industry trends, BMW finished with six segment victories, a share of the highest overall model ranking through the X6 and 7 Series, and a fourth consecutive class win for the MINI Countryman.

Those results gave BMW the strongest APEAL performance of any corporation in this year’s J.D. Power study.
