The Nissan Z Kaze Concept brings a modern take on the JDM tuning era to Nissan’s annual ZCON gathering in Phoenix, Arizona, combining the latest 2027 Z with design cues and performance upgrades inspired by some of the automaker’s most iconic sports cars.

Nissan Z Kaze Concept Brings Back the Retro Era

Nissan unveiled the new Z Kaze Concept at ZCON, the annual gathering for Nissan Z enthusiasts hosted by the Z Car Club Association. The concept is based on the latest 2027 Z and draws heavily from Nissan’s sports car heritage.

One of its most distinctive features is the T-top roof, an option first introduced on the 280ZX in the early 1980s before becoming almost standard on the two generations of the 300ZX that followed. The removable roof panels also tie directly into the concept’s name, as Kaze is the Japanese word for “wind.”

The nostalgia continues with the 18-inch Nismo LMGT2 wheels. The forged, multi-piece wheels have long been out of production, so Nissan’s designers sourced an original set and had them restored for the concept.

The wheels measure 10 inches wide at the front and 11 inches at the rear, helping give the Z Kaze Concept its distinctive stance. A carbon-fiber body kit further enhances its appearance.

Interior Changes Accommodate the T-Top Roof

Inside, Nissan made more subtle changes while retaining the concept’s performance-focused theme. The T-top roof required reinforcement of the roof structure along with modifications to the interior trim surrounding the removable panels.

Carbon-fiber accents add to the performance theme, while Bose headrest speakers provide a modern touch for occupants who want to listen to music with the roof panels removed.

GReddy Performance Upgrades Under the Hood

The large “GReddy” graphic running along the sides of the Z Kaze Concept is a clear nod to the JDM tuning scene. GReddy is the performance brand of Japanese company Trust and is primarily known for powertrain upgrades, particularly for turbocharged powertrains.

Nissan has not provided detailed information about the concept’s full power output, but it has confirmed several GReddy upgrades, including the Supreme SP exhaust system, Airinx air filter and a custom air-to-air intercooler.

Those upgrades are intended to help increase output from the Z’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 beyond its stock 400 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque.

To complement the added performance, Nissan also equipped the concept with suspension upgrades from its own Nismo catalog.

The Missing Manual Transmission

There is one notable departure from the performance-focused character of the Z Kaze Concept: Nissan chose an automatic-equipped Z as the donor vehicle.

The seven-speed automatic is certainly no slushbox, but its presence contrasts with the concept’s JDM tuning theme. A three-pedal manual setup would have completed the retro-inspired performance package.

The Nissan Z Kaze Concept ultimately combines the latest 2027 Z with T-top styling, restored Nismo LMGT2 wheels, carbon-fiber components and GReddy performance upgrades in a modern tribute to Nissan’s tuning heritage.
