The all-electric BMW M3, codenamed ZA0, has been spotted testing on public roads in Germany, offering a closer look at the high-performance sedan ahead of its expected 2027 debut. The camouflaged prototype reveals a wide, muscular stance, a confirmed quad-motor powertrain and a battery pack exceeding 100 kWh, while its final horsepower rating remains undisclosed.

The latest sighting near the Nürburgring provides a clearer sense of the electric M3’s proportions in everyday driving conditions. Its styling follows BMW’s Neue Klasse design language, although the rear end appears more restrained than the concept car that previewed the model.

Electric BMW M3 Reveals Muscular Design

The prototype was seen driving on public roads near an Audi SUV, highlighting its broad stance and pronounced rear haunches. Heavy camouflage still conceals many of its design details, but the overall shape appears consistent with the Neue Klasse styling direction.

Compared with the concept car, the prototype appears to have a less dramatic rear design. The difference reflects how concept vehicles can feature more exaggerated styling than production models.

BMW M3 EV Could Feature Carbon-Ceramic Brakes

One of the most noticeable details on the test vehicle is its gold brake calipers. Although BMW has not confirmed the braking system, their appearance could indicate that the electric M3 will offer carbon-ceramic brakes.

Such brakes would be relevant for a high-performance electric vehicle carrying substantial battery hardware. The ZA0’s confirmed battery pack exceeds 100 kWh, making it larger than the 84-kWh battery in the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N.

The prototype was also spotted at a BMW facility producing sounds resembling cooling fans. Cooling will be important for the car’s confirmed quad-motor powertrain, although BMW has not yet disclosed its final power output.

Electric BMW M3 Could Deliver Up to 900 Horsepower

Reports suggest the electric BMW M3 could produce around 800 to 900 horsepower, but that figure has not been confirmed. If those estimates prove accurate, the ZA0 would become the most powerful production M car, surpassing the 738-hp output of the BMW XM Label.

The combination of a battery pack exceeding 100 kWh and four electric motors points to a high-performance setup, but the model’s final specifications remain undisclosed.

BMW Panoramic Vision Appears Inside the Electric M3

The prototype’s dashboard was briefly visible, revealing what appears to be BMW Panoramic Vision. The system stretches across the base of the windshield and is designed to reduce the need for drivers to look down at the dashboard to check essential driving information.

The display would bring BMW’s newer cabin technology into its upcoming electric performance sedan, although the brief glimpse does not confirm the complete interior configuration.

Electric BMW M3 Expected to Debut in 2027

The all-electric BMW M3 is expected to make its debut in 2027. It will sit above the BMW i3, which is scheduled to arrive in the United States in the first quarter of 2027 with a starting price of $61,500 before destination charges. The M model is expected to cost more.

BMW is not abandoning gasoline power for the M3 nameplate. The model, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, is also expected to receive a gasoline-powered version later, potentially with mild-hybrid assistance while retaining its inline-six engine.

The electric ZA0 will join a broader M3 lineup expected to include both electric and gasoline-powered models. Further details about the electric version have not yet been announced.
