HWA is teasing a new high-performance road car that could revive the spirit of the legendary Mercedes-AMG Hammer. The company has released a preview of an unnamed vehicle whose silhouette appears similar to the Mercedes-Benz W124, raising the possibility that its next project could reinterpret one of AMG’s most iconic performance cars for the modern era. However, the vehicle’s identity and specifications have not been officially confirmed.

AMG’s Independent Roots Before the Mercedes Merger

AMG has been responsible for Mercedes-Benz’s factory high-performance cars for more than 30 years. The two companies signed a cooperation agreement in 1990, and their first jointly developed model, the W202 C36 AMG, was presented in 1993. The relationship subsequently evolved into a majority stake before becoming a full merger.

Before that partnership, AMG operated independently, building high-performance Mercedes-Benz models much like Alpina did with BMW. Its early creations included the 560 SEC AMG Widebody, the 190E 3.2 AMG, the 300 SEL 6.8 AMG race car and the legendary car known simply as The Hammer.

These vehicles established AMG’s reputation for transforming Mercedes-Benz models into powerful performance machines before the company became an integrated part of the automaker’s high-performance lineup.

HWA Builds on Its Mercedes-AMG Racing Heritage

HWA has longstanding ties to Mercedes-Benz and AMG. One of its co-founders is Hans Werner Aufrecht, whose surname supplies the A in AMG. Established in 1998, HWA was created as a spin-off racing division and has become closely involved in factory-level motorsport operations across several racing categories.

The company does more than operate a race team. Its activities include high-performance motorsport engineering, race car development and low-volume sports cars.

Its latest creation is the HWA Evo, a comprehensively reimagined and modernized version of the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evo II, which competed successfully in DTM and several other racing series.

HWA Evo Demonstrates Its Performance Capabilities

The HWA Evo recently competed in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, securing second and third place in its class, with all three entries completing the race.

The result demonstrated that HWA’s work extends beyond restomod projects. The company has shown that it can develop specialized road cars with the engineering and durability needed to perform in demanding motorsport conditions.

Following the Evo project, HWA appears to be preparing another ambitious vehicle. Its latest teaser offers few details, and the company has not disclosed the car’s name.

Could HWA Be Reimagining the Legendary AMG Hammer?

The teaser’s silhouette may look familiar to enthusiasts of classic Mercedes-Benz models. Its outline appears to resemble the W124, the midsize Mercedes-Benz model that would eventually become known as the E-Class.

This resemblance has fueled speculation that HWA could be developing a modern interpretation of the AMG Hammer. The company has already demonstrated its ability to transform the 190E into a contemporary performance car that can be driven on public roads, making a similar approach to another iconic Mercedes-Benz model a possibility.

However, HWA has not confirmed that the upcoming vehicle is a new Hammer. Its identity and design remain uncertain until the company reveals further details.

The Original AMG Hammer Set a High Performance Benchmark

The prospect of a modern AMG Hammer carries significant expectations because the original model was a groundbreaking performance sedan when it arrived in 1986.

Based on a Mercedes-Benz Series 124, the original Hammer featured a highly tuned 5.6-liter V8 engine from the 560 SEL. The powertrain produced 355 horsepower and 388 pound-feet of torque, figures previously unheard of in a midsize German car.

In 1988, AMG increased the engine’s displacement to 6.0 liters, raising output to 385 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. The upgraded powertrain helped establish a formula for subsequent AMG models based on the E-Class.

Although those figures may seem modest compared with modern performance sedans, they were groundbreaking at the time and gave the original Hammer enough performance to challenge supercars from the same era.

Expectations Rise for HWA’s Next Performance Car

If HWA is developing a modern interpretation of the AMG Hammer, expectations will be high following the company’s work on the Evo. The original Hammer established its reputation by delivering performance capable of challenging some of its era’s most exotic sports cars.

A contemporary version would face a different performance landscape, with the Lamborghini Revuelto and Ferrari 849 Testarossa representing the kind of modern supercars it would need to challenge. For now, HWA has yet to confirm whether its upcoming project will bring the legendary Hammer name back to the road.
