BMW and Rimac are expanding their electric vehicle partnership, with two additional models in development beyond the already announced 2027 BMW i7. The collaboration highlights Rimac’s growing role in BMW’s electric vehicle technology following a three-year development effort to meet the German automaker’s demanding production and performance requirements.

Rimac founder Mate Rimac confirmed that the partnership includes two more vehicles but said further details are not yet available. The arrangement also marks a significant milestone for Rimac, whose first electric vehicle project involved converting an older BMW E30 into a fully electric car.

BMW and Rimac Plan Two More Models

The partnership between BMW and Rimac is set to extend beyond the 2027 BMW i7. Two additional cars are already in the development pipeline, although their identities and technical details have not been disclosed.

The updated i7 is the first vehicle to incorporate Rimac technology, demonstrating the company’s ability to meet BMW’s requirements for cost, quality, production capacity and performance.

BMW’s Neue Klasse models could be potential candidates for Rimac’s electric vehicle technology, although no additional vehicles have been officially identified as part of the collaboration.

Three Years of Development Helped Secure the Deal

Winning BMW’s business required a substantial development effort. The process took three years, with multiple suppliers competing for the opportunity to work with the automaker.

To demonstrate its commitment, Rimac made a significant decision before securing the contract. When BMW representatives visited the company’s campus, they were shown where a production line designed to meet BMW’s requirements would be located.

Rimac committed to building the facility to satisfy BMW’s production standards even before the agreement was finalized, demonstrating its willingness to invest in the long-term partnership.

Rimac Technology Boosts the BMW i7’s Range

Under the partnership, Rimac helped BMW integrate cylindrical battery cells into the i7 as part of its mid-cycle facelift. The updated configuration combines Gen6 technology with a Gen5 module design.

The result is a 20% increase in battery energy density. The revised technology adds 75 miles of range to the updated i7, bringing its total range to more than 452 miles.

The collaboration also represents a full-circle moment for Rimac. The company’s first electric vehicle project involved converting an older E30 into a fully electric vehicle, and it is now working with BMW on advanced battery technology for a production model.

BMW and Rimac’s EV Partnership Continues to Grow

With two additional vehicles in development beyond the 2027 BMW i7, the partnership is expanding beyond its initial application. The collaboration combines Rimac’s electric vehicle technology with BMW’s requirements for manufacturing quality, cost control, production capacity and performance, while details about the upcoming models remain undisclosed.
