General Motors is investing more than $2 billion in its Michigan operations as it prepares to build hybrid vehicles, potentially improving fuel economy across its largest family SUVs. The investment includes funding for the Lansing Delta Township Assembly plant, where the Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave are currently produced.

The move could mark a significant change for GM’s three-row crossovers, which currently rely on gasoline engines as competitors expand their hybrid offerings. Although the automaker has not confirmed specific products or launch dates, the investment will prepare its facilities for the production requirements of next-generation hybrid vehicles.

GM Invests More Than $2 Billion in Michigan Plants

General Motors announced plans to invest more than $2 billion in its operations in Michigan’s capital city. The total includes a previously announced $1.25 billion investment in Lansing Grand River Assembly to prepare the facility for future vehicles.

At least $750 million remains allocated for Lansing Delta Township Assembly, which currently builds GM’s three large crossovers. The funding will allow the plant to accommodate the high-voltage electrical systems and powertrain configurations required for next-generation hybrid vehicles.

GM has not announced specific production timelines or identified which vehicles will receive hybrid powertrains. However, the plant’s established focus on large crossovers suggests that its existing models could remain central to its future production plans.

The Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave have been built at the facility since their introduction for the 2008 model year. The plant also produced the short-lived Saturn Outlook.

The three large SUVs could be among GM’s first modern hybrid vehicles, although the company has not confirmed the specific models.

Why GM Needs Hybrid SUVs

Hybrid powertrains could help GM improve the fuel economy of its family-oriented crossovers as competition in the segment intensifies. The Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave currently come standard with a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four engine.

Models equipped with all-wheel drive achieve 21 mpg combined, while front-wheel-drive versions deliver 22 mpg combined.

Although those figures are reasonable for gasoline-powered SUVs, competitors are expanding their hybrid offerings. The Toyota Grand Highlander and Kia Telluride hybrid models deliver fuel economy figures reaching as high as 36 mpg, creating additional pressure on GM’s current lineup.

The difference could become increasingly important for families comparing fuel costs and everyday efficiency when shopping for a three-row SUV.

GM SUVs Face Competition From Hybrid Models

The 2027 Chevrolet Traverse competes with several large crossovers, including the Kia Telluride and Toyota Grand Highlander. Their specifications highlight differences in engine output, fuel economy, towing capacity and cargo space.

  • 2027 Chevrolet Traverse: Turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four engine producing 328 horsepower and 326 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy is rated at 20/25/22 mpg, with a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds and maximum cargo capacity of 97.6 cubic feet.
  • 2027 Kia Telluride: Turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four engine producing 274 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy is rated at 20/26/22 mpg, with a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds and maximum cargo capacity of 89.3 cubic feet.
  • 2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid: Turbocharged hybrid 2.5-liter inline-four powertrain producing 329 horsepower and 339 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy is rated at 34/36/35 mpg, with a towing capacity of 4,000 pounds and maximum cargo capacity of 88.3 cubic feet.
  • 2027 Toyota Grand Highlander: Turbocharged 2.4-liter inline-four engine producing 265 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy is rated at 21/28/24 mpg, with a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds and maximum cargo capacity of 97.5 cubic feet.
  • 2027 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid: Hybrid 2.5-liter inline-four engine producing 245 horsepower.

These figures illustrate the potential fuel economy advantages of hybrid technology. The Kia Telluride Hybrid, for example, delivers up to 36 mpg, compared with a maximum combined rating of 22 mpg for the gasoline-powered Telluride.

GM Dealers Want More Electrified Vehicles

GM’s current family SUV lineup faces growing competition as Toyota, Kia and Honda expand their hybrid offerings. Dealers have been asking the automaker for more electrified products to help them compete for customers who prioritize fuel efficiency.

The pressure comes as gasoline prices in the United States approach record highs, increasing the appeal of vehicles that can reduce fuel consumption.

The Hyundai Palisade, a relative of the Kia Telluride, is also part of the competitive landscape. Hybrid technology highlights the potential for improved efficiency and performance compared with conventional gasoline-powered SUVs.

Hybrids Gain Importance as U.S. EV Adoption Slows

American consumers are not adopting electric vehicles as quickly as consumers in Europe and China. Potential reasons include weaker public charging infrastructure in the United States and fewer incentives compared with other regions.

As a result, hybrids are attracting consumers seeking to reduce the impact of rising fuel costs without relying entirely on an electric vehicle.

GM’s planned investment in Michigan could help the automaker respond to that demand by preparing its production facilities for hybrid vehicles. Although specific models and launch dates have not been announced, the investment will prepare the Lansing Delta Township plant for hybrid production alongside its established three-row crossover lineup.
