McLaren has revealed the name of its next supercar, the McL 820, which will replace the outgoing 750S when the new model arrives in 2027. The announcement comes as the automaker prepares to stop accepting orders for the 750S ahead of its discontinuation sometime in 2027, marking a new chapter for the British brand’s supercar lineup.

The McL 820 name was revealed through an unusual sculpture installed in London’s Covent Garden shopping district. The display offers an early glimpse of McLaren’s next performance car, although the company has not yet released its full specifications.

McLaren Reveals the McL 820 Through a London Sculpture

Covent Garden, a high-end shopping area in London’s West End, is hosting a three-dimensional sculpture inspired by McLaren’s Speedy Kiwi logo. The artwork features the brand’s trademark Papaya Orange color alongside black bars, with the name “McL 820” displayed on the bird.

McLaren has confirmed that McL 820 is the official name of the 750S successor. The company says the new vehicle will arrive in 2027.

The new naming structure combines the “McL” prefix, inspired by the company’s motorsport heritage, with a numerical identifier tied to performance. The number in McL 820 represents the vehicle’s stated power output of 820 PS.

What Does the McLaren McL 820 Name Mean?

The McL designation is part of McLaren’s naming approach for its latest models. It also appears on the recently unveiled McL 6GT hypercar, which is scheduled to reach the road in 2028.

Although full specifications for the McL 6GT have not been released, the vehicle is described as featuring a six-speed manual gearbox.

The McL 820’s 820 PS output is equivalent to approximately 808.78 horsepower. McLaren has previously used power figures in its model names, including the 750S, which produces 750 PS, equivalent to 740 horsepower.

How Much Faster Could the McL 820 Be?

The outgoing McLaren 750S can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 2.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 206 mph. If the McL 820 delivers its stated power output without other changes to the vehicle, the additional power could improve acceleration and top speed.

The successor may also benefit from updated technology, reduced weight and improved aerodynamics. These potential changes could help the additional power translate into greater performance, although McLaren has not confirmed the new model’s technical specifications.

Will the McLaren McL 820 Feature a V8 or Hybrid Power?

The McL 820’s powertrain details remain unconfirmed. Based on its position as the successor to the 750S, the new supercar is expected to use a V8 engine, while the smaller Artura uses a V6.

Like previous McLaren road cars, the McL 820 is also expected to feature a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis. Hybrid assistance is another possibility, as modern McLaren models often use electrification to increase power and reduce emissions.

However, the company has not confirmed whether the McL 820 will feature a hybrid system or provided details about its engine, weight, aerodynamics or performance figures.

When Will McLaren Replace the 750S?

McLaren announced in October 2026 that it was taking the final orders for the 750S ahead of discontinuing the model sometime in 2027. The McL 820 is scheduled to arrive in the same year.

The 750S debuted in 2023 as a facelift of the 720S, which arrived in 2017. In 2026, McLaren introduced the 788HS as a further development of the same formula, increasing output to 777 horsepower.

Production of the 788HS was limited to 100 coupes and 100 Spider convertibles.

With the McL 820 scheduled to arrive in 2027, McLaren is gradually revealing details about the successor while the 750S approaches the end of its production run. For now, the model’s name and stated 820 PS output are confirmed, while its full design and technical specifications remain undisclosed.
