Ford is preparing to unveil an aggressive new Bronco off-road concept at SEMA 2026, and early teasers suggest the project could include a major engine upgrade. The SUV started as a flagship Bronco Raptor, but the latest footage shows its factory twin-turbocharged V6 being removed, raising the possibility that a V8 could take its place.
Ford Previews an Extreme Bronco Off-Road Build
The upcoming Bronco concept is headed to Las Vegas for SEMA 2026, which begins next week. The available footage reveals modifications that appear to go well beyond the appearance of the original Bronco Raptor.
A garage crew is shown applying fluorescent yellow and orange graphics to the SUV and installing matching yellow seats. One exterior shot also appears to show the word “recovery” on the vehicle’s wrap.
The mechanical changes are equally significant. The team removes the Bronco Raptor’s Fox Live Valve long-travel suspension and replaces it with undisclosed aftermarket components designed to prioritize off-road capability over on-road comfort.
Bronco Raptor’s Twin-Turbo V6 Is Removed
The most intriguing moment comes near the end of the footage, when two mechanics attach an engine hoist to the factory twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 and lift it out of the Bronco Raptor’s engine bay.
Ford has not identified the replacement engine, but the removal suggests the possibility of a V8. Replacing the existing V6 with another engine of the same type would be an unusual move, particularly because aftermarket parts and tuning solutions can increase the EcoBoost engine’s power without requiring a complete replacement.
The footage also reveals 42-inch mud tires mounted on 18-inch Weld Racing wheels. However, the complete list of modifications has not been disclosed.
It remains unclear whether Ford is building the vehicle itself or supporting an outside company involved in the project. More details are expected next week.
SEMA 2026 is scheduled to open on Tuesday, November 3.
Which Ford V8 Could Power the Bronco Concept?
Several engines could potentially power the off-road-focused SUV. Ford already produces a V8-powered Bronco in the form of the off-road-only Desert Racer, which uses a tuned version of the company’s 5.0-liter Coyote V8.
In the Bronco DR, the engine produces 415 horsepower and 485 pound-feet of torque. Those figures exceed the output of both the F-150 V8, rated at 400 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque, and the EcoBoost-powered Bronco Raptor, which delivers 418 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque.
Another possibility is Ford’s Voodoo V8, normally found in the Mustang Dark Horse SC and F-150 Raptor R. Its external dimensions are similar to those of the 5.0-liter engine, suggesting it could potentially fit in the same space.
The concept could also use a supercharged 5.2-liter V8, which would deliver more than 700 horsepower.
More Details Expected at SEMA 2026
Ford has not confirmed the concept’s final engine choice or revealed its complete specifications. However, the removal of the factory V6, suspension changes and massive off-road tires indicate an extensive transformation of the Bronco Raptor.
The vehicle is expected to appear at SEMA 2026, beginning November 3, when more information about its powertrain and off-road upgrades could be revealed.
