The Rivian R2 is already becoming a major sales driver for the electric vehicle maker, outselling the larger R1S and R1T combined during the third quarter of 2026. Despite launching with a starting price of $59,485, the midsize electric crossover has attracted stronger-than-expected demand as Rivian prepares to introduce more affordable versions.

Rivian R2 Outsells R1S and R1T Combined

Since launching in June, the Rivian R2 has generated strong customer interest, with reservation and conversion rates for the launch edition remaining above the company’s expectations during the quarter.

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said the reservation and conversion rates for the launch edition R2 remained higher than expected.

During its October 29, 2026, earnings call, Rivian reported that the R2 outsold the more expensive R1S crossover and R1T pickup truck combined in the third quarter. It became the company’s best-selling model in the United States and Canada during the period, also surpassing sales of its electric delivery vans for Amazon.

Following the results, Rivian raised its 2026 delivery guidance to between 67,000 and 70,000 vehicles, up from its previous range of 65,000 to 70,000.

The company also recently added a second shift at its factory in Normal, Illinois, to support the R2’s initial sales.

Why Rivian Launched the R2 Performance First

Rivian’s decision to introduce the high-priced R2 Performance before its more affordable trims was part of a deliberate strategy.

The company said it intentionally sequenced the launch with a higher-priced variant before introducing additional trims as production volume grows, with the goal of supporting a healthy, positive gross margin for the R2 business.

The R2 Performance currently starts at $59,485 with the Launch Package. As a high-end model, it allows Rivian to generate stronger margins on each vehicle sold before expanding the lineup with lower-priced versions.

The launch edition has also received positive industry reviews, with its performance and driving capabilities drawing attention.

Rivian R2 Performance Features and Range

The R2 Performance delivers 656 horsepower through a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive system and can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds.

The crossover offers a range of 330 miles and supports fast charging from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes.

The launch edition also includes a lifetime Autonomy Plus driver-assistance subscription and a unique green key fob. Buyers can additionally choose a green exterior color and an optional tow package.

Rivian R2 Premium and Standard Prices

Rivian plans to expand the R2 lineup with a Premium trim and a more affordable Standard model.

The R2 Premium, positioned as the mid-grade variant, will start at $55,485, including shipping, and is expected to arrive in late 2026.

The Premium will offer 450 horsepower, all-wheel drive and a range of 330 miles.

The entry-level R2 Standard will start at $46,485 and is expected to launch in summer 2027. It will offer 275 miles of range and a rear-wheel-drive powertrain.

Customers choosing the Standard model will also have options to increase its range and capability. The long-range version will cost an additional $3,500, while a configuration combining long range with all-wheel drive will cost $7,000 more.

Rivian Faces Pressure to Expand the R2 Lineup

With the R2 Performance starting at $59,485 and potentially costing more with additional options, Rivian’s upcoming lower-priced trims will be important to expanding the model’s appeal.

The Premium is scheduled to arrive in late 2026, followed by the Standard in summer 2027, giving Rivian a broader range of prices and configurations as it builds on the R2’s early sales performance.
