Ford is dominating the hybrid pickup truck market in 2026, with the Maverick significantly outselling Toyota’s hybrid Tacoma despite the Tacoma’s much higher overall sales. The latest sales figures highlight the growing gap between the two automakers in the hybrid pickup segment.

Ford Maverick Hybrid Sales Surge in 2026

Ford’s compact Maverick was the best-selling hybrid pickup truck in the United States during the third quarter of 2026. Hybrid sales jumped 60% to 27,793 units during the quarter.

For the first three quarters of 2026, Ford sold 74,300 Maverick hybrids, with just over 60% of buyers choosing the hybrid powertrain.

The addition of an all-wheel-drive hybrid option has helped strengthen the Maverick’s appeal, offering buyers a fuel-efficient pickup capable of towing up to 4,000 pounds.

However, the Maverick is not the only compact pickup available with hybrid power. Toyota’s Tacoma has substantially higher overall sales, making its comparatively low hybrid numbers particularly notable.

Toyota Tacoma Hybrid Falls Far Behind Ford

Toyota sold more than 214,000 Tacoma pickups through September 2026, compared with approximately 123,000 Ford Mavericks.

Despite that significant sales advantage, Toyota recorded just 22,985 Tacoma Hybrid sales for the entire year through the reported period. That represents approximately 10% of total Tacoma sales.

The figure falls short of Ford’s 27,793 Maverick hybrid sales in the third quarter alone.

Toyota’s hybrid Tacoma also trails the Ford F-150 PowerBoost, which recorded 34,527 sales through the end of September, placing Ford’s full-size hybrid pickup ahead of Toyota.

Toyota Tundra Hybrid Performs Better

Toyota’s larger pickup has achieved a higher hybrid adoption rate than the Tacoma. The Tundra Hybrid recorded 20,574 sales during the first nine months of 2026, accounting for approximately 19% of total Tundra sales.

The higher hybrid share suggests that fuel efficiency may be a more significant consideration for buyers of the larger pickup than for those purchasing the smaller Tacoma.

Hybrid Availability and Pricing Give Ford an Advantage

One potential explanation for the Maverick’s lead is the availability of hybrid power across its lineup.

Ford offers the hybrid system on nearly every Maverick version, starting with the front-wheel-drive XL at $29,990, including destination, and extending to the $39,935 Lariat equipped with the 4K tow package.

Toyota takes a different approach with the Tacoma. The hybrid powertrain is not available until the TRD Sport trim, which starts at $49,080.

Toyota offers hybrid power on additional higher-end Tacoma trims, including the Limited. It is also the only engine option for the top-spec Trailhunter and TRD Pro models, suggesting that relatively few buyers are choosing those top trims.

Ford F-150 and Toyota Tundra Hybrid Take Rates

The Ford F-150 and Toyota Tundra have more comparable hybrid adoption rates, partly because both automakers position their hybrid systems higher in their respective lineups.

Toyota introduces the i-Force Max hybrid on the Tundra Limited, the third trim level, and makes it standard on the TRD Pro and Capstone.

Ford offers the F-150 PowerBoost starting with the XLT, its second trim level, but keeps it optional on the top Platinum trims. The hybrid powertrain is not available on the Tremor or Raptor.

Ford’s broader hybrid availability on the Maverick, combined with its lower entry price, contrasts with Toyota’s decision to reserve Tacoma hybrid power for more expensive trims.

The result is a substantial gap in hybrid pickup sales in 2026, with the Maverick leading the segment by a wide margin.
