The 2028 BMW X5 M is taking shape with a radically different design and a major change under the hood. The next-generation high-performance SUV is expected to offer both an all-electric powertrain and a mild-hybrid 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8, marking a significant shift for BMW’s M lineup.
The G95-generation X5 M has been spotted testing near the Nürburgring, revealing a more aggressive appearance than the current F95 model and a design that will distinguish it from the upcoming G65 X5. The electric version is also expected to deliver up to 900 horsepower.
2028 BMW X5 M Gets an Aggressive New Design
The new BMW X5 M appears to feature larger, more substantial kidney grille elements positioned between the headlights, giving the front end a look closer to the upcoming facelifted G90 M5 sedan than the standard X5’s narrow, vertical grille design.
However, the prototype is still wearing temporary headlight and taillight units, meaning the final styling remains uncertain. BMW could still make significant changes to the front fascia and other design elements before production.
The electric X5 M, which is not expected to carry the iX5 M name, appears to feature vents in the hood. These openings may help cool the front motors of its anticipated 800-volt, quad-motor powertrain.
The hood also appears to have a shallower central recess than other Neue Klasse designs, potentially giving the SUV a more muscular appearance than M models based on the 3 Series.
Additional design details include extended front and rear bumpers and a distinctive rear spoiler with two jagged elements separated by a large central recess.
Drilled brake discs provide another indication that the prototype is an M model, although the test wheels are not expected to make production. A glass roof is also visible.
BMW X5 M Interior Expected to Get M-Specific Details
The cabin is expected to feature M-specific upholstery and graphics for BMW’s Panoramic Vision iDrive system.
While the prototype’s interior details remain largely concealed, the expected changes would distinguish the high-performance SUV from the standard X5.
Electric BMW X5 M Could Deliver 900 Horsepower
The electric BMW X5 M is rumored to produce up to 900 horsepower, potentially making it one of the most powerful vehicles in the upcoming M lineup.
The SUV is expected to use an 800-volt quad-motor setup, while its substantial power output would help distinguish it from the gasoline-powered version.
The electric model is also expected to be heavier than its combustion-powered counterpart, making its performance and positioning a significant part of BMW’s strategy for the new generation.
The prototype has previously been spotted wearing Michelin Pilot Sport S 5 tires, which appear suited to the SUV’s anticipated performance capabilities.
BMW X5 M V8 Version Could Approach 700 Horsepower
The gasoline-powered BMW X5 M is expected to retain a mild-hybrid 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine.
The current X5 M Competition produces 617 horsepower, but the next-generation model is expected to deliver a substantial increase in output.
Potential improvements could include a larger battery, along with changes to the S68 engine’s timing, ignition and turbocharging systems to improve efficiency and performance.
The next X5 M could approach the 700-horsepower mark, although its final output has not been confirmed.
2028 BMW X5 M Production and Launch Timeline
The G95 BMW X5 M is expected to enter production at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina in 2028.
The electric version is predicted to arrive ahead of the gasoline-powered X5 M, with the latter potentially launching in 2029. The standard gasoline-powered X5 is expected to enter production in December 2028.
The new X5 M is also part of BMW’s broader performance-car expansion, with 30 new M models expected by 2029.
With an all-electric version potentially reaching 900 horsepower and a redesigned V8 model expected to approach 700 horsepower, the next-generation BMW X5 M is shaping up to be a major departure from the current SUV.
