The Toyota GR86’s optional performance package offers Brembo brakes and Sachs dampers for as little as $1,500, but replacing its brake components can cost more than three times the package’s original price. A complete set of replacement pads and rotors for a GR86 equipped with the performance package can reach $5,028.34 before taxes and labor.
The steep replacement costs highlight the financial trade-off behind Toyota’s performance upgrade, which is available on select GR86 models and provides upgraded hardware at a relatively low initial price.
Toyota GR86 Performance Package Includes Brembo Brakes
The GR86 performance package includes Sachs dampers and a Brembo big brake kit. Toyota charges $2,020 for the package on the base trim and $1,500 on the Premium trim.
While the upgrade represents an attractive option when purchasing a new vehicle, the cost of replacement brake components can quickly exceed the original package price.
Brembo Brake Pads and Rotors Cost Thousands
The suggested retail price for the GR86’s front Brembo brake pads is $1,481.44. Each front rotor costs $521.25, bringing the price for two front rotors to $1,042.50.
That puts the total for the front pads and rotors at $2,523.94 before taxes and labor.
The rear components are also expensive. Rear brake pads cost $1,380, while each rear rotor is priced at $562.20.
Replacing pads and rotors at all four corners brings the total parts bill to $5,028.34. That is more than three times the cost of the performance package on the Premium trim, without accounting for installation or taxes.
The quoted figures are retail prices, and repair shops may obtain the parts at discounted rates. Even with those discounts, the total could still approach $4,000.
Online Prices Offer Some Relief
Online pricing provides a less expensive alternative to the listed retail figures. Non-Brembo GR86 models use brake pads that cost about $100 for either the front or rear axle.
For Brembo-equipped models, online prices for the pad sets are approximately $992.16 for the front and $924.09 for the rear.
Although those prices are lower than the retail figures, they still demonstrate the significant cost difference between standard GR86 brakes and the performance package’s Brembo setup.
How the GR86 Brembo Brakes Compare
The GR86’s Brembo system uses four-piston fixed calipers with 12.8-inch front rotors and red-painted calipers. At the rear, the car has two-piston calipers paired with 12.4-inch rotors.
The setup does not use carbon-ceramic brakes. Instead, it is a conventional Brembo system similar to the configuration found on older Subaru WRX STI and BRZ models.
The high replacement costs stand in contrast to the system’s relatively conventional hardware, particularly when compared with the price of the original performance package.
Aftermarket Brake Parts May Be an Alternative
GR86 owners can also consider aftermarket brake pads and rotors. Some owners have identified alternative components and shared recommendations online.
However, installing aftermarket parts could raise questions about the vehicle’s warranty.
While Toyota’s GR86 performance package remains relatively affordable at purchase, maintaining its Brembo brakes can be expensive, with a full replacement potentially exceeding $5,000 in parts alone.
