The 2028 Chevrolet Camaro is expected to make a return in a familiar format after its discontinuation, with signs pointing to a classic two-door, four-seat, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive coupe rather than an electric SUV. If introduced, the model would mark the latest chapter for Chevrolet’s iconic pony car.
Camaro Poised for a Return
The Chevrolet Camaro has been discontinued twice, first from 2003 through 2010 and again from 2025 to the present. While General Motors previously explored reviving the Camaro as an electric SUV to compete with the Ford Mustang Mach-E, current indications suggest the nameplate could return for the 2028 model year as a traditional coupe.
The expected configuration mirrors the Camaro’s long-standing formula with two doors, seating for four, a front-engine layout, and rear-wheel drive.
Why the Return Matters
The pony and muscle car segments have historically been strongest when Detroit’s three major automakers competed directly with one another.
Dodge discontinued the Challenger and replaced it with the new Charger. According to the report, the launch has faced build-quality and software issues, while its electric version and six-cylinder all-wheel-drive variant have not attracted customers in significant numbers.
Ford, meanwhile, has continued expanding the Mustang lineup with premium models such as the upcoming Mustang Dark Horse SC and the Mustang GTD, while continuing to offer the Mustang EcoBoost and Mustang GT.
With those developments, the report suggests the segment presents an opportunity for a new Camaro to have a significant impact.
Expected Platform
The 2028 Chevrolet Camaro is expected to ride on General Motors’ updated Alpha rear-wheel-drive platform, known as Alpha 2-2.
The platform is also expected to underpin the 2028 Cadillac CT5 and an officially unnamed 2029 Buick sedan that the report says could be called Regal. The updated architecture is expected to maintain the balance and handling characteristics associated with previous Alpha-based vehicles.
Projected Engine Options
The report indicates the base engine will most likely be a version of GM’s LSY 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four, with output increased to at least match the base Ford Mustang’s 315 horsepower.
Additional V-8 engine options are also expected, likely sourced from the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado. The report says the Silverado’s new 5.7-liter V-8 is expected to power the next-generation Camaro SS with approximately 500 horsepower.
A larger 6.6-liter V-8 is also expected to fit the Alpha 2-2 platform, providing the foundation for a potential Camaro Z/28 revival.
Transmission Choices
The report expects both a six-speed manual transmission and a 10-speed automatic transmission to be available when the 2028 Chevrolet Camaro launches.
While General Motors has not officially confirmed the vehicle, the report points to a return that stays true to the Camaro’s traditional formula, combining a rear-wheel-drive platform with a range of turbocharged and V-8 powertrain options.
