The Lada Niva Legend has received a significant update, introducing the model’s first-ever driver airbag nearly five decades after its debut. While the rugged SUV retains its familiar design and off-road character, the latest version also gains a new engine, improved comfort features, and numerous component upgrades.
Lada Niva Legend Keeps Its Classic Design
The Lada Niva Legend has remained in production since 1977 and continues to preserve its recognizable boxy styling. Built by the state-owned AvtoVAZ, the off-roader receives only subtle exterior revisions while maintaining the appearance that has defined the model for decades.
Among the visible updates are new 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. According to Lada, the refreshed model includes more than 100 new components and 60 upgraded parts.
To improve durability, the hood, roof, and tailgate now use galvanized steel for increased corrosion resistance, helping the vehicle better withstand harsh operating environments.
AvtoVAZ also offers a more modern-looking version known as the Niva Travel, featuring front-end styling that bears more than a passing resemblance to the Lexus GX.
First Driver Airbag Headlines Interior Improvements
The most notable change is the addition of the Niva Legend’s first-ever driver airbag.
Due to sanctions resulting in shortages, newly built Russian vehicles do not require numerous safety features, including ABS, seatbelt pretensioners, airbags, and the same emission standards. Despite those conditions, AvtoVAZ says the Lada Niva will now be equipped with airbags going forward.
The updated SUV also gains improved sound insulation, upgraded powertrain mounts, a more effective air-conditioning system, heated front seats, and a functional onboard computer.
Technology remains basic, however. The Niva continues to use a traditional car radio and does not include an infotainment touchscreen.
Pricing and Current Discounts
The base Lada Niva Legend Classic starts at 1,099,000 ₽ ($14,100), while the Black Series is priced at 1,258,000 ₽ ($16,100).
Lada is also offering a 20% discount across the Niva lineup, reducing the entry price to 784,000 ₽ ($10,000).
New 1.8-Liter Engine Replaces Longtime Powertrain
The updated Niva replaces its long-serving 1.7-liter four-cylinder engine with a naturally aspirated 1.8-liter engine producing 89 horsepower and 113 lb-ft of torque.
According to the company, the revised engine delivers stronger low-end pulling power and improved efficiency. Official performance specifications have not yet been released.
The previous 1.7-liter engine produced 6 horsepower less and accelerated from 0 to 62 mph in around 17 seconds before reaching a top speed of 88 mph. It also returned a combined fuel economy of 23.76 mpg.
Classic Off-Road Capability Remains
The Lada Niva continues to feature permanent all-wheel drive, 7.87 inches of ground clearance, and a curb weight of nearly 2,800 pounds.
The SUV also maintains compact dimensions, including an 86.6-inch wheelbase, a length of 143 inches, and a width of 66 inches.
Although brands such as BMW stopped selling new vehicles in Russia after exiting the market in 2022, state-owned brands continue operating. The Lada Niva remains a key example, with AvtoVAZ continuing to update the nearly 50-year-old model rather than replacing it.
With its first driver airbag, a new engine, and several comfort upgrades, the latest Lada Niva Legend introduces meaningful changes while preserving the traditional character that has defined the vehicle for decades.
