The Nissan Leaf NISMO has been officially revealed in Japan, bringing a sportier version of Nissan’s third-generation electric hatchback with sharper styling, upgraded handling, and NISMO-focused interior touches. Instead of adding more power, Nissan is focusing on making the Leaf feel lighter, more responsive, and more engaging to drive.
Nissan Leaf NISMO Brings a New Performance-Focused Approach
The Nissan Leaf has evolved significantly from its early days as one of the first mainstream electric hatchbacks. In its third generation, Nissan moved away from the previous five-door design and adopted a sleeker crossover-inspired shape, supported by a new EV platform designed to provide improved range, additional technology, and a smoother driving experience.
With the introduction of the Leaf NISMO, Nissan is adding the model to its expanding NISMO lineup. However, the company is not pursuing higher output for this version. Instead, the focus is on improving handling, agility, and everyday driving enjoyment.
Sportier Exterior Design With NISMO Styling
The Leaf NISMO features a more aggressive appearance compared with the standard model. The design includes a redesigned front bumper with air-guiding corners, new side skirts, and a rear bumper inspired by a speedboat-style shape.
A ducktail spoiler is added at the rear to provide additional downforce without increasing drag. Nissan also incorporates NISMO’s signature red accents across the lower body, front lip, rear bumper, and mirrors.
The performance-focused look is completed with 19-inch Enkei wheels fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tires.
NISMO Interior Adds Sporty Details
Inside, the Leaf NISMO receives a black-themed cabin with red stitching and accents throughout the dashboard and seats. The steering wheel features a red stripe and a synthetic leather covering designed to resemble nappa leather.
Nissan also offers a version equipped with NISMO-tuned RECARO seats. These seats feature embroidered logos, red perforated inserts, and power recline functionality.
The cabin also includes NISMO-specific graphics for the power meter and instrument panel, adding additional visual changes for drivers.
No Extra Power, But Improved Handling
Unlike performance electric models such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, the Nissan Leaf NISMO does not receive additional power compared with the standard Leaf. Nissan says the goal is improved handling rather than increased acceleration.
The Leaf NISMO uses the same power options as the regular model. The 52-kWh battery version produces 174 horsepower and 254 lb-ft of torque, while the 75-kWh battery option delivers 214 horsepower and 261 lb-ft of torque.
Instead of increasing output, Nissan has upgraded the chassis with exclusive springs, stabilizer bars, bushings, swing-valve dampers, and revised drive modes. The Leaf NISMO is also the first NISMO model to feature special regenerative braking paddles with four adjustable levels.
Nissan Leaf NISMO U.S. Availability Remains Unconfirmed
The Leaf NISMO is not expected to deliver quicker acceleration than the standard model. Nissan’s changes are aimed at creating a crossover that handles corners better, responds more sharply to steering inputs, and provides a more enjoyable driving experience.
Nissan has not announced plans to bring the Leaf NISMO to the United States, with availability currently limited to Japan. The model launches with a starting price of 6,601,100 yen, or around $40,500 at current exchange rates.
For now, the Nissan Leaf NISMO remains exclusive to the Japanese market as Nissan continues expanding its NISMO performance lineup.
