The Tesla suspension probe has expanded to nearly 1.2 million vehicles after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched a Preliminary Evaluation into reports of front suspension failures. The investigation covers certain Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles following complaints that a suspension component could detach, potentially affecting steering control.
NHTSA Investigates Reports of Suspension Failures
The NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation has opened a Preliminary Evaluation covering approximately 1.2 million Tesla vehicles. The investigation includes 2018-2020 Model 3 sedans and 2021-2023 Model Y SUVs.
According to the investigation, the focus is on the front lower lateral link, a suspension component that may detach and result in a loss of steering control.
More Than 150 Complaints Reviewed
Regulators have identified 156 complaints related to the reported issue. As of the investigation’s launch, no crashes, injuries, or fatalities have been associated with the reported failures.
The investigation summary states that most owners reported the suspension failure occurring without warning. While some drivers noticed unusual noises beforehand, they reported no warning lights or dashboard alerts before the component failed.
In many of the reported cases, the affected vehicles became undrivable and required towing.
Investigation Extends Beyond Previous Recall
Tesla previously recalled certain Model 3 vehicles for a lateral link issue. However, NHTSA investigators believe the newly reported incidents extend beyond the scope of that earlier recall.
The agency also indicated that the current complaints do not appear to stem from the same production issue addressed in the previous recall.
No Recall Has Been Announced
The investigation remains in its Preliminary Evaluation stage, and no recall has been announced.
During this phase, NHTSA will examine the cause of the reported failures, determine how many vehicles may be affected, and evaluate whether the issue presents a safety-related defect that warrants additional action.
Owners of affected Model 3 and Model Y vehicles may wish to monitor for unusual suspension noises or changes in steering behavior and have any suspected issues inspected promptly while the investigation continues.
The Preliminary Evaluation will determine whether further action, including a potential recall, is necessary based on the agency’s findings.
